Transmission Case

Tools Required

    • J 8092 Universal Driver Handle
    • J 36190 Universal Driver Handle
    • J 39435 Bearing Race Installer
    • J 39439-4 Bushing Installer
    • J 39439-3 Bushing Installer

  1. Install the lst/2nd and the 3rd/4th shift shaft bushings. Use the J 36190 , the J 39439-4 , and the J 39439-3 .

  2. Object Number: 38373  Size: SH
  3. Install the mainshaft bearing race, using the J 8092 and the J 39435 .

  4. Object Number: 38372  Size: SH
  5. Install the countershaft bearing race, using the J 8092 and the J 39435 .

  6. Object Number: 38365  Size: SH
  7. Install the dowel pins.

  8. Object Number: 672674  Size: SH
  9. Apply sealant GM P/N United States 12346004, GM P/N Canada 10953480 or equivalent to the threads of the reverse lamp switch.

  10. Object Number: 38364  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  11. Install the reverse lamp switch.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the switch to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  13. Apply sealant GM P/N United States 12346004, GM P/N Canada 10953480 or equivalent to the threads of the transmission case fill plug (1), MM6 only.
  14. Apply sealant GM P/N United States 12346004, GM P/N Canada 10953480 or equivalent to the threads of the temperature switch, M12 only.

  15. Object Number: 672686  Size: SH
  16. Install the transmission case fill plug (1), MM6 only.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission case fill plug to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  18. Install the temperature switch (2), M12 only.
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the temperature switch to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).

    Notice: The H-pattern on the guide plate must face the extension housing. If the guide plate is installed incorrectly, then damage will occur.

  20. Install the guide plate and the guide plate bolts.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 22 N·m (16 Ib ft).

Adapter Plate

Tools Required

    • J 39433 Input Shaft Seal Installer
    • J 39439-1 Shift Rail Bushing Remover/lnstaller
    • J 42464 Shift Shaft Seal lnstaller
    • J 42496 Inner Shift Rail Inner Seal lnstaller

    Object Number: 350579  Size: SH
  1. Install the dowel pins.

  2. Object Number: 350581  Size: SH

    Notice: If the 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th speed shift shaft bushing is installed incorrectly it will interfere with the inner shift rail seal causing a leak.

  3. Install the 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th speed shift shaft bushing flush with adapter plate, using the J 39439-1 .

  5. Install the inner shift rail seal (1) using the J 42496 . Garter spring should face inside of transmission.
  6. Install the outer shift rail seal (2) using the J 42464 .

  7. Object Number: 350583  Size: SH
  8. Install the input shaft seal, using the J 39433 .

  9. Object Number: 350574  Size: SH
  10. Install the countershaft bearing shim and bearing race. Refer to Input Shaft, Mainshaft and Countershaft in Shimming Procedures .

  11. Object Number: 350571  Size: SH
  12. Install the input shaft bearing shim and bearing race. Refer to Input Shaft, Mainshaft and Countershaft in Shimming Procedures .

  13. Object Number: 350569  Size: SH
  14. Install the neutral return cam spring.
  15. Install the neutral return cam spring retaining bolt and washer.
  16. Install the neutral return cam.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
