Surface Irregularities at Base of Wheel Spokes (Inspect Wheel and Replace If Necessary)

Subject:Surface Irregularities at Base of Wheel Spokes (Inspect Wheel and Replace If Necessary)

Models:2000-2004 Chevrolet Corvette
with Polished Wheels (RPO QF5)

Condition

Over time and miles, some customers may notice surface imperfections/irregularities in the form of straight or meandering lines at the point where the wheel spokes meet the rim. Due to the highly polished (bright) finish of these wheels, this imperfection may be noticeable and/or unsightly to the customer.

Cause

The base of the wheel spokes is an area which may, over time and distance, display these irregularities.

Correction

Important: Engineering has reviewed a sample of the reported cases of wheel imperfections and GM considers this to be cosmetic. The irregularities do not pose any safety issue.

Do This

Don't Do This

Evaluate and/or replace the wheel.

DO NOT try to repair the wheel.

GM recognizes that some customers may find these unsightly imperfections unacceptable. If a wheel is presented to the dealership for coverage under the terms of the GM New Vehicle Limited Warranty, the wheel MUST first be inspected for road hazard damage. Road hazard damage to a wheel is not considered to be a warrantable event. It is possible, due to the stiff sidewall construction of run flat tires, the wheel could sustain an impact without signs of outwardly visible damage. Before an authorized replaced, wheels should be inspected for evidence of impact or an out-of-round condition. A wheel is considered out-of-round if there is more than 0.76 mm (.030 in) variation on the outer or inner circumference.

If there is no evidence of impact causing excessive runout, the wheel should be replaced under the terms of the GM New Vehicle Limited Warranty. If a customer is outside of the warranty period by time or miles, the individual case should be reviewed by the authorized dealership personnel or the District Service Manager for authorization.
