Removal Procedure

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.

  3. Object Number: 675453  Size: SH
  4. Remove the positive battery cable nut.
  5. Remove the positive battery cable terminal and the engine harness leads from the solenoid.
  6. Remove the S terminal nut (2).
  7. Remove the purple wire lead (1) and washer from the solenoid.

  9. Support the starter motor.
  10. Remove the starter motor bolts.
  11. Remove the starter motor.

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the starter motor to the block.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the starter motor bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the starter motor bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

    Important: Orient the purple lead wire to the 10 o'clock position when installing.

  5. Install the starter motor S terminal washer and purple lead wire (1).
  6. Install the S terminal nut (2).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the S terminal nut to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

    Important: Orient gray and rust harness leads to the 6 o'clock and 7 o'clock position.

  8. Install the gray and rust harness leads to the solenoid.
  9. Install the positive battery cable terminal to the solenoid.
  10. Install the positive battery cable nut.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the positive battery cable nut to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  12. Install the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.

  14. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
