The IPC illuminates the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message in the driver information center (DIC) when the engine control module (ECM) determines that the engine oil needs to be changed. The PCM sends a class 2 message to the IPC requesting illumination. After the oil is changed, reset the engine oil monitor. Refer to GM Oil Life System Resetting in Maintenance and Lubrication.
The IPC illuminates the MIL telltale when the ECM detects a malfuntion in the engine emission system. The MIL indicates that an emission related malfuntion has occured and vehicle service is required. The MIL telltale is hardwired to the ECM and the ECM will ground the MIL control circuit when it wants the indicator illuminated in the IPC. Refer to Engine Control Module Description in Engine Controls.
The IPC illuminates the CHECK OIL LEVEL message in the driver information center (DIC) when the engine control module (ECM) detects low engine oil level, and the signal circuit is high. The ECM only monitors the signal circuit of the engine oil level switch for a brief period when the key moves from ON to START. The IPC receives a class 2 message requesting illumination from the ECM.
The DIC illuminates the ICE POSSIBLE message when the outside air temperature drops below 2.0°C (36°F). When the temperature rises above 5.5°C (42°F) the ICE POSSIBLE message turns off. The IPC receives a class 2 message indicating the outside air temperature from the body control module (BCM).
The IPC illuminates the LOW FUEL message in the driver information center (DIC) when the ECM detects that the fuel level is less than a pre-determined value. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the ECM indicating the fuel level .
The IPC illuminates the LOW OIL PRESSURE message in the driver information center (DIC) when the ECM detects low engine oil pressure, and the signal circuit is low. The IPC receives a class 2 message requesting illumination from the ECM.
The DIC illuminates the SERVICE VEHICLE SOON message in the driver information center (DIC) when the IPC detects certain malfunctions like the ABS system failure or the system power mode failure. The IPC illumination from the ECM.
