Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Depress and hold the brake pedal.
  3. Observe the backup lamps.
  4. Shift the gear selector to the REVERSE position and then to the PARK position.

Do the backup lamps operate properly?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Verify that the vehicle is in the PARK position.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. With the scan tool, observe the Backup Lamp Relay Cmd. parameter in the body control module (BCM) lighting data list.

Does the scan tool indicate the Backup Lamp Relay Cmd. is OFF?

Go to Step 4

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the reverse lamp relay. Refer to Relay Replacement in Wiring Systems.
  3. Verify that the vehicle is in the PARK position.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Do the backup lamps turn OFF?

Locate and repair a short to battery voltage in the backup lamps voltage supply circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 11

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the reverse lamp relay control side voltage supply circuit and the backup lamp relay control circuit.
  3. Verify that the vehicle is in the PARK position.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 9

Inspect for poor connections at the reverse lamp relay. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 11

Replace the reverse lamp relay. Refer to Relay Replacement in Wiring Systems.

Did you complete the repair?

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the BCM. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

  3. Place the vehicle in the NEUTRAL position.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  5. With the scan tool, observe the Backup Lamp Relay Cmd. parameter in the body control module (BCM) lighting data list.

Does the scan tool indicate the Backup Lamp Relay Cmd. is OFF?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
