Subject: | Repeat XM Antenna failure |
Models: | 2005 Corvette coupe |
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
A 2005 Chevrolet Corvette coupe customer may comment/complain of a repeated loss of the XM signal and/or a "no signal message" displayed on the radio. Furthermore, the XM antenna may have been replaced and corrected the concern for a brief period of time. XM and Engineering have determined that some types of after market car covers can create a static electricity that discharges through the XM antenna when it is removed.
Avoid using any type of car cover(s) that produce static electricity, especially in warm dry climates. 100v of static generation in 65-90% humidity increases to 6000v in 10-25% humidity. A car cover comprising of synthetic materials can produce as much as 38,000v in a warm dry climate.
Important Note: If the customer insists on using a car cover(s), it is important that the cover be constructed from materials such as canvas with a 100% cotton liner. Such a cover(s) can be found at www.carcovers.com.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
