Tools Required

    • J 42162 Getrag Axle Side Gear Compressor
    • J 42170 Getrag Axle Bearing Race Installer
    • J 42173 Getrag Axle Ring Gear Holder

    Object Number: 1764669 Size: SH

    Important: Friction discs and separator plates develop specific wear patterns and are a matched set. During disc and plate installation, the components must be installed in the specific order in which they were removed.

  1. Install the right clutch pack to the right case.
    2. • Install the separator plates (3).
    • Install the friction discs (2).
    • Install the bellville washer (1).

  2. Install the right output shaft (6) into the side gear (5) and retain with the output shaft retaining ring (4) - some models.
  3. Install the right output shaft and gear (3), pinion gears (1), and washers (2) to the right differential case.

  4. Using the J 42162 and a hydraulic press, compress the bellville washer and clutch pack in order to install the cross pin to the right differential case.
  5. Using an M8 bolt for alignment, properly position the cross pin into the right differential case. The hole in the pin (2) must align with the hole in the case. During final assembly of the case halves, the pin retaining bolt (1) must be able to pass through the hole in the cross pin.
  6. With the pin and case aligned, release the pressure from the press and remove the J 42162 and bolt.

  7. Install the gear to the left output shaft.
  8. Install the C-clip to the left output shaft.

  9. Using the J 42170 and a hydraulic press, install the left side bearing to the differential.

    10. Object Number: 1764666 Size: SH

  10. Install the left clutch pack to the left case.
    11. • Install the separator plates (1).
    • Install the friction discs (2).
    • Install the bellville washer (3).

  11. Install the left output shaft and gear to the left case.

    12. Object Number: 58600 Size: SH
  12. Assemble the case halves.

    13. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  13. Install the case bolts.

    14. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 55 N·m (41 lb ft).


    Object Number: 63595 Size: SH

    Important: Do not assemble the ring gear at this step. Refer to Differential Side Bearings Assemble .

  14. Using the J 42170 and a hydraulic press, install the right side bearing to the differential.
