DEFINITION: Windshield wiper motor operates when the wiper switch is OFF.

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

  1. Turn the windshield wiper/washer switch OFF.
  2. Turn ON the ignition.

Are the windshield wipers always ON?

Go to Step 3

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With a scan tool, observe the Windshield Wiper Switch parameter in the Body Control Module data list.

Does the Windshield Wiper Switch parameter display Delay, Mist, or Low?

Go to Step 4

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the windshield wiper/washer switch.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. With a scan tool, observe the Windshield Wiper Switch parameter in the Body Control Module data list.

Does the Windshield Wiper Switch parameter display Delay, Mist, or Low?

  1. Remove the wiper HI/LO relay. Refer to Relay Replacement .
  2. Probe the windshield wiper switch high signal circuit of the wiper HI/LO relay with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 7

Test the windshield wiper switch low signal circuit between the wiper switch and the body control module (BCM) for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 13

Test the windshield wiper switch high signal circuit between the wiper switch and the wiper HI/LO relay for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the windshield wiper/washer switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs .

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the body control module (BCM). Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs .

Replace the windshield wiper/washer switch. Refer to Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement .

Replace the wiper ON/OFF relay. Refer to Relay Replacement .

Replace the BCM. Refer to Control Module References for replacement, setup, and programming.

  1. Reconnect all previous disconnected components.
  2. Clear all DTCs with a scan tool.
  3. Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
