Diagnostic Instructions

    • Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
    • Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
    •  Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

Circuit/System Description

The vehicle is equipped with power windows controlled by door modules. The passenger door window can be operated, either from a power window switch built into the driver door switch assembly (DDSA), or from a power window switch mounted locally on the passenger door. The driver door window can be operated only from the driver door power window switch built into the DDSA.

When the driver door module (DDM) receives a driver door window switch request from the DDSA, the DDM examines the request and checks for messages from other vehicle control modules prohibiting the window movement. If no prohibitive messages have been received, the DDM will apply power and ground to the driver door window motor to move the window as requested.

When the passenger door module (PDM) receives a window switch request from either the DDSA or the window switch mounted locally to it, the PDM will examine the request and check for messages from other vehicle control modules prohibiting the window movement. If no prohibitive messages have been received, the door module will apply power and ground to its associated window motor to move the window as requested. For more detailed information concerning power window operation refer to Power Windows Description and Operation .

Circuit/System Testing

Power Window Inoperative - Driver Door

  1. Ignition ON, command the driver window motor up and down with a scan tool. The driver window should move up and down when commanded.
  2. If the driver window does not move up and down, replace the DDM.
  3. If all circuits test normal, replace the DDSA.

Power Window Inoperative - Passenger Door

  1. Ignition ON, command the passenger window motor up and down with a scan tool. The passenger window should move up and down when commanded.
  2. If the passenger window does not move up and down, replace the PDM.
  3. Observe the scan tool driver RF window switch parameter while activating the driver RF window switch to the up and down positions. The reading should change between up and down.
  4. If the reading does not change between up and down, replace the DDSA.
  5. Disconnect the harness connector at the passenger window switch.
  6. Test for less than 1.0 ohm of resistance between the passenger window switch ground circuit terminal 4 and ground.
  7. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  8. Connect the harness connector at the passenger window switch.
  9. Observe the scan tool Front Passenger Window Switch parameter while activating the passenger window switch to the up and down positions. The reading should change between up and down.
  10. If the reading does not change between up and down, test the appropriate power window switch signal circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, replace the passenger window switch.
  11. If all circuits test normal, replace the PDM.
