Diagnostic Instructions
Circuit/System Description
The FUEL DR RELEASE relay switch and coil terminals are supplied with battery voltage at all times via the PRW/WINDOWS/TRUNK/FUEL RELEASE circuit breaker from the BATT 1 fuse. When the fuel door release switch is activated, ground is applied to
the coil side of the FUEL DR RELEASE relay. This energizes the coil causing the switch contacts to close. With the switch contacts closed, battery voltage is supplied to the fuel door release actuator, opening the fuel door. Ground for the fuel door release
switch is supplied at G201 and the fuel door release actuator is provided ground at G301.

Circuit/System Testing
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the fuel door release relay.
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal D6 and ground.
⇒ | If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. |
- Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal D4 and ground.
⇒ | If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal and the B+ circuit fuse is open, test the control circuit terminal D6 for a short to ground.
If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the fuel door release relay. |
- Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal C4 and ground.
⇒ | If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for an open/high resistance. |
- Disconnect the harness connector at the fuel door release actuator.
- Test for less than 1.0 ohm of resistance between the fuel door release actuator ground circuit terminal B and ground.
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance. |
- Connect the harness connector at the fuel door release actuator.
- Connect a 15-A fused jumper wire between the B+ circuit terminal C4 and the control circuit terminal D6. Verify the fuel door release actuator is activated.
⇒ | If the fuel door release actuator does not activate, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the fuel door release actuator. |
- Disconnect the harness connector at the fuel door release switch.
- Test for less than 1.0 ohm of resistance between the fuel door release switch ground circuit terminal A and ground.
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance. |
- Connect the harness connector at the fuel door release switch.
- Connect a test lamp between the B+ circuit terminal D4 and the control circuit terminal C6.
- Activate the fuel door release switch ON and OFF. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF as the fuel door release switch is activated ON and OFF.
⇒ | If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the fuel door release switch. |
⇒ | If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the fuel door release switch. |
- If all circuits test normal, test or replace the fuel door release relay.
