Engine Front Cover Replacement Except 6.2L(LS9) and 7.0L

Special Tools

    • J 41480 Front/Rear Cover Alignment - Oil Pan Surface
    • J 41476 Front and Rear Cover Alignment (Crankshaft Oil Seal Area)

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1507244  Size: SH
  1. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
  2. Remove the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement.

  3. Object Number: 1402049  Size: SH
  4. Remove the front cover bolts (501).
  5. Remove the front cover (502) and gasket (503).
  6. Discard the front cover gasket.
  7. Clean and inspect the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Cleaning and Inspection.

  8. Object Number: 1402050  Size: SH
  9. Remove the oil seal (140).
  10. Remove the bolts (705, 738), camshaft position sensor (703), and wire harness (737).
  11. Remove the O-ring (704) from the sensor as required.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1481463  Size: SH
  1. Apply a 5 mm (0.2 in) bead of sealant 20 mm (0.8 in) long to the engine block. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers for the correct part number.
  2. Apply the sealant directly onto the tabs of the front cover gasket that protrude into the oil pan surface.

    Important: 

       • Do not use the crankshaft oil seal or the engine front cover gasket again.
       • Do not apply any type of sealant to the front cover gasket, unless specified.
       • The special tools in this procedure are used to properly align the engine front cover at the oil pan surface and to center the crankshaft front oil seal.
          - All gasket surfaces should be free of oil or other foreign material during assembly.
          - The crankshaft front oil seal MUST be centered in relation to the crankshaft.
          - The oil pan sealing surface at the front cover and engine block MUST be aligned within specifications.
          - An improperly aligned front cover may cause premature front oil seal wear and/or engine assembly oil leaks.

  3. Install the front cover gasket (503), front cover (502), and bolts (501).
  4. Tighten the cover bolts finger tight. Do not overtighten.
  5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 63182  Size: SH

    Important: Start the tool-to-front cover bolts. Do not tighten the bolts at this time.

  6. Install the J 41480 .
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the tool-to-engine block bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).


    Object Number: 63185  Size: SH

    Important: Align the tapered legs of the tool with the machined alignment surfaces on the front cover.

  8. Install the J 41476 .
  9. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  10. Tighten

    1. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt by hand until snug. Do not overtighten.
    2. Tighten the J 41480 .
    3. Tighten the engine front cover bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
  11. Remove the tools.

  12. Object Number: 1402104  Size: SH
  13. Measure the oil pan surface flatness, front cover-to-engine block.
  14. 8.1. Place a straight edge across the engine block and front cover oil pan sealing surfaces.

    Avoid contact with the portion of the gasket that protrudes into the oil pan surface.

    8.2. Insert a feeler gage between the front cover and the straight edge tool. The cover must be flush with the oil pan surface, or no greater than 0.5 mm (0.02 in) (a) below flush.
  15. If the front cover-to-engine block oil pan surface alignment is not within specifications, repeat the cover alignment procedure.
  16. If the correct front cover-to-engine block alignment cannot be obtained, replace the front cover.

  17. Object Number: 1402111  Size: SH
  18. Inspect the camshaft position sensor O-ring seal (704) for cuts or damage. If the seal is not cut or damaged, it may be used again.
  19. Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
  20. Install the O-ring seal onto the sensor (703).
  21. Install the sensor to the cover.
  22. Install the camshaft position sensor wire harness (737) and bolts (705, 738).
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  24. Install the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement.
  25. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.

Engine Front Cover Replacement 7.0L

Special Tools

    • EN-47812 Installer Bolt
    • EN-47813 Front Cover Alignment

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory.
  2. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) drive belt and tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement - Air Conditioning.
  3. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.

  4. Object Number: 1705970  Size: SH
  5. Remove the 2 front oil pan to front cover M8 bolts.
  6. Remove the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement.

  7. Object Number: 1705990  Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.

  9. Object Number: 1552543  Size: SH
  10. Remove the front cover bolts (501).
  11. Remove the front cover (502) and gasket (503).
  12. Discard the front cover gasket.
  13. Clean and inspect the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Cleaning and Inspection.

  14. Object Number: 1552506  Size: SH
  15. Remove the oil seal (140).
  16. Remove the bolt (705), CMP sensor (703).
  17. Remove the O-ring (704) from the sensor, as required.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1481463  Size: SH
  1. Apply a 5 mm (0.2 in) bead of sealant 20 mm (0.8 in) long to the engine block. Apply the sealant to the T joint location where the oil pan meets the front of the engine block. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers for the correct part number.

  2. Object Number: 1552543  Size: SH

    Important: 

       • Do not use the crankshaft oil seal or the engine front cover gasket again.
       • Do not apply any type of sealant to the front cover gasket, unless specified.
       • The special tools in this procedure are used to properly align the engine front cover at the oil pan surface and to center the crankshaft front oil seal.
          - All gasket surfaces should be free of oil or other foreign material during assembly.
          - The crankshaft front oil seal MUST be centered in relation to the crankshaft.
          - The oil pan sealing surface at the front cover and engine block MUST be aligned within specifications.
          - An improperly aligned front cover may cause premature front oil seal wear and/or engine assembly oil leaks.

  3. Install the front cover gasket (503), front cover (502), and bolts (501).
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

    Important: Start the tool-to-front cover bolts. Do not tighten the bolts at this time.

  5. Tighten the cover bolts finger tight. Do not overtighten.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the tool-to-engine block bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  7. Install the EN-47812 over the bolt to the crankshaft.
  8. Install the EN-47813 .
  9. Insert the tapered surface of the tool into the oil seal bore of the cover EN-47812 washer and nut.
  10. Tighten the nut by hand until snug. Do not overtighten.

    Tighten
    Tighten the engine front cover bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  11. Remove the tools.

  12. Object Number: 1552506  Size: SH
  13. Inspect the CMP sensor O-ring seal (704) for cuts or damage. If the seal is not cut or damaged, it may be used again.
  14. Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
  15. Install the O-ring seal onto the sensor (703).
  16. Install the sensor to the cover.
  17. Install the CMP sensor and bolt (705).
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  19. Install the new crankshaft front oil seal. Refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Replacement.

  20. Object Number: 1705990  Size: SH
  21. Connect the CMP sensor electrical connector.
  22. Install the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement.
  23. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
  24. Install the A/C drive belt and tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement - Air Conditioning.
  25. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory.

Engine Front Cover Replacement 6.2L (LS9) and 7.0L

Special Tools

    • EN-47812 Installer Bolt
    • EN-47813 Front Cover Alignment

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory.
  2. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) drive belt and tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement - Air Conditioning.
  3. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.

  4. Object Number: 1705970  Size: SH
  5. Remove the 2 front oil pan to front cover M8 bolts.
  6. Remove the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement.

  7. Object Number: 1705990  Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.

  9. Object Number: 2126896  Size: SH
  10. Remove the front cover bolts (1).
  11. Remove the front cover (2) and gasket (3).
  12. Discard the front cover gasket.
  13. Clean and inspect the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Cleaning and Inspection.

  14. Object Number: 1552506  Size: SH
  15. Remove the oil seal (140).
  16. Remove the bolt (705), camshaft position (CMP) sensor (703).
  17. Remove the O-ring (704) from the sensor, as required.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 2126894  Size: SH
  1. Apply a 5 mm (0.2 in) bead of sealant 20 mm (0.8 in) long to the engine block. Apply the sealant to the T joint location where the oil pan meets the front of the engine block. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers for the correct part number.

  2. Object Number: 2126896  Size: SH

    Important: 

       • Do not use the crankshaft oil seal or the engine front cover gasket again.
       • Do not apply any type of sealant to the front cover gasket, unless specified.
       • The special tools in this procedure are used to properly align the engine front cover at the oil pan surface and to center the crankshaft front oil seal.
          - All gasket surfaces should be free of oil or other foreign material during assembly.
          - The crankshaft front oil seal MUST be centered in relation to the crankshaft.
          - The oil pan sealing surface at the front cover and engine block MUST be aligned within specifications.
          - An improperly aligned front cover may cause premature front oil seal wear and/or engine assembly oil leaks.

  3. Install a NEW crankshaft front oil seal. Refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Replacement.
  4. Install the front cover gasket (3), front cover (2), and bolts (1).
  5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

    Important: Start the tool-to-front cover bolts. Do not tighten the bolts at this time.

  6. Tighten the cover bolts finger tight. Do not overtighten..
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the tool-to-engine block bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  8. Install the EN-47812 over the bolt to the crankshaft.
  9. Install the EN-47813 .

  10. Object Number: 2126898  Size: SH
  11. Insert the tapered surface of the tool into the oil seal bore of the cover EN-47812 washer and nut.
  12. Tighten the nut by hand until snug. Do not overtighten..

    Tighten
    Tighten the engine front cover bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  13. Remove the tools.

  14. Object Number: 1552506  Size: SH
  15. Inspect the CMP sensor O-ring seal (704) for cuts or damage. If the seal is not cut or damaged, it may be used again.
  16. Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
  17. Install the O-ring seal onto the sensor (703).
  18. Install the sensor to the cover.
  19. Install the CMP sensor and bolt (705).
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  21. Install the new crankshaft front oil seal. Refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Replacement.

  22. Object Number: 1705990  Size: SH
  23. Connect the CMP sensor electrical connector.
  24. Install the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement.
  25. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
  26. Install the A/C drive belt and tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement - Air Conditioning.
  27. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory.
