GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

The driver information center (DIC) displays the driver identifier greeting for 5 seconds when it first powers up. If enabled through Options, the DIC then returns to the last display status before no power condition.

There are 4 buttons on the DIC.

    • Fuel
    • Gages
    • TRIP
    • OPTIONS
    • RESET

Fuel

Press the Fuel button to display fuel information such as:

    • Fuel Range
    • Average Fuel Economy
    • Instantaneous Fuel Economy

Fuel Range

This message indicates the estimated distance that the vehicle can travel under the current fuel economy and fuel level conditions since the last battery connection to the IPC. Fuel Range is calculated using the equation: Fuel Range = Distance Sum/Fuel Sum.

    • Distance Sum = The accumulated distance travelled since the last reset of this value.
    • Fuel Sum = The accumulated fuel delivered since the last reset of this value

The ECM sends the fuel range value to the BCM. The instrument panel cluster (IPC) receives a serial data message from the BCM with the fuel information. The fuel range value is retained during ignition OFF and can be changed between English and Metric units by pressing the English/Metric button on the driver information center (DIC) switch. The Fuel Range display cannot be reset. Whenever the calculated fuel range is less than 64 Km/h (39.8 miles) RANGE-LOW is displayed.

Average Fuel Economy

Average fuel economy is calculated using the equation: AFE = Distance/Fuel

    • Distance = The accumulated distance travelled since the last reset of this value
    • Fuel = The accumulated fuel consumption since the last reset of this value

The ECM sends the average fuel economy serial data message to the BCM. The instrument panel cluster (IPC) receives a serial data message from the BCM regarding fuel usage information. The value of this mode is retained during ignition OFF and can be changed between English units and metric units by pressing the English/Metric button on the DIC switch. Press and hold the reset button on the driver information center (DIC) switch for 1 second in order to reset the AFE display.

Instantaneous Fuel Economy (IFE)

Instantaneous fuel economy (IFE) is calculated using the equation: IFE = Distance/Fuel.

    • Distance = The accumulated distance travelled for the last 2 seconds
    • Fuel = The accumulated fuel delivered for the last 2 seconds

The instrument panel cluster (IPC) receives a serial message from the BCM with fuel level information. The distance information is calculated by the IPC using the vehicle speed information from the ECM. These values are retained during ignition OFF and can be changed between English and Metric units by pressing the English/Metric button on the driver information center (DIC) switch. The IFE display cannot be reset.

Gages

The gages button is used in order to scroll the following DIC menus:

Press the gages button again to display the oil temperature, such as:

    • OIL TEMPERATURE 234°F or
    • OIL TEMPERATURE 112°C

If the oil temperature is low, the display will show OIL TEMPERATURE LOW. If the oil temperature is high, the display will show OIL TEMPERATURE HIGH.

Coolant Temperature: This display shows the engine coolant temperature.

Press the gages button again to display the coolant temperature, such as:

    • COOLANT TEMPERATURE 123°F or
    • COOLANT TEMPERATURE 51°C

If the coolant temperature is low, the display will show COOLANT TEMPERATURE LOW. If the coolant temperature is high, the display will show COOLANT TEMPERATURE HIGH.

Transmission Fluid Temperature: If you have an automatic transmission vehicle, this display shows the automatic transmission fluid temperature.

Press the gages button again to display the automatic transmission fluid temperature, such as:

    • TRANS FLUID TEMP 123°F or
    • TRANS FLUID TEMP 51°C

If the transmission fluid temperature is low, the display will show TRANS FLUID TEMP LOW. If the transmission fluid temperature is high, the display will show TRANS FLUID TEMP HIGH.

Battery Voltage: This display shows the current battery voltage.

Press the gages button again to display the battery voltage, such as:

BATTERY VOLTAGE 13.5 VOLTS

Tire Pressure: This display shows the tire pressure for each tire.

Press the gages button again to display the tire pressure for the front tires, such as:

    • FRONT TIRE PRESSURES L 34 PSI R 33 PSI or
    • FRONT TIRE PRESSURES L 234 kPa R 228 kPa

Press the gages button again to display the tire pressure for the rear tires, such as:

    • REAR TIRE PRESSURES L 34 PSI R 33 PSI or
    • REAR TIRE PRESSURES L 234 kPa R 228 kPa

TRIP

The TRIP button is used in order to scroll the following DIC menus

    • Odometer
    • Trip Odometer
    • Elapsed Time
    • Average Speed
    • Oil Life Remaining
Odometer: The odometer shows how far your vehicle has been driven in either miles or kilometers. Press the TRIP button to display odometer readings, such as:

    • ODOMETER 12345 MI or
    • ODOMETER 20008 km

The odometer can be displayed by turning on the parking lamps.

Trip Odometers: There are two trip odometers. Press the TRIP button to display TRIP ODOMETER A readings and press the button again to display TRIP ODOMETER B readings, such as:
