Preliminary Procedures

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  3. Check the alignment upon completion of the repair. Refer to Wheel Alignment Specifications.

Upper Ball Joint Nut

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

Note: Suitably support the lower control arm before removing the ball joint nut.

Tip
Use the J-42188-B to separate the ball joint stud from the upper control arm.

Tighten
20 N·m (15 lb ft) plus an additional 195 degrees

Upper Control Arm Bolt (Qty: 4)

Tighten
65 N·m (48 lb ft)

Upper Control Arm Washer (Qty: 4)

Note: 

   • Note that this washer (without insert) MUST be positioned closest to the control arm.
   • The upper control washers will effect caster and camber. Make sure to use a equal number of washers on both sides of each upper control arm bushing.

Upper Control Arm Washer With Insert (Qty: 4)

Note: 

   • Note that this washer (with insert) MUST be positioned closest to the frame.
   • Ensure that only ONE washer with a retaining insert is used on each control arm bolt.

Limiter Brackets (Qty: 2)

Tip
The limiter brackets must be installed on the inboard side of the rear upper control arm bushings.

J-42188-B Ball Joint Separator

Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 919156 Size: SH
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  3. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  4. Disconnect the electronic suspension control sensor link. Refer to Electronic Suspension Rear Position Sensor Replacement.

  5. Using the J-42188-B , separate the suspension knuckle (1) from the upper control arm.
  6. Support the lower control arm with a jack stand.
  7. Loosen the upper ball joint stud nut, but do not remove the nut.

    8. Object Number: 922525 Size: SH
  8. Remove the bolts retaining the upper control arm to the frame.
  9. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 922525 Size: SH
  1. Install the upper control arm to the vehicle.

    2. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  2. Install the upper control arm mounting bolts and to the frame.

    3. Tighten
    Tighten the upper control arm mounting bolts to 110 N·m (81 lb ft).

  3. Install the suspension knuckle upper ball joint stud into the upper control arm.

    4. It may be necessary to use an allen wrench to keep the ball joint stud from spinning while tightening the ball joint stud nut.

  4. Install the upper ball joint stud nut.

    5. Tighten
    Tighten the suspension knuckle ball joint stud nut to 30 N·m (22 lb ft) plus 195 degrees.

  5. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  6. Connect the electronic suspension control sensor link. Refer to Electronic Suspension Rear Position Sensor Replacement.
  7. Remove the jack stand from the lower control arm.
  8. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Perform a rear wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement.
