When the headlamp switch is in the park lamps ON position, voltage is applied to the chime module. With the headlamp switch ON and the driver side door open, the module loses voltage. The module senses this change. Voltage is applied to sound the chime. To silence the chime turn the headlamp switch to OFF or close the driver side door.
The headlamps are controlled by the multifunction lever on the left side of the steering column. The lamps will turn on while the ignition key is in the ON position. If the headlamp switch is ON and the ignition key is in the ACC or LOCK position, the headlamps will turn off automatically.
Turning the headlamp switch to the first position turns ON the parking lamps, the license plate lamps, and the instrument panel (I/P) illumination. Turning the switch to the second position also turns ON the headlamps. Turning the switch OFF turns off all the lamps.
The headlamps high beam and low beam are also controlled by the multifunction lever. When the headlamps are ON, pushing the lever away from the driver until the switch clicks changes the lamp from low beam to high beam. An indicator lamp on the instrument cluster assembly illuminates when the high beam headlamps are ON. Pull the lever forward to return the headlamps to low beams.
Aim the headlamps for proper illumination of the road. Verify the headlamp aim whenever a new headlamp assembly is installed or when service or repairs to the front end may have disturbed the headlamp assembly or the mountings.
The daytime running lamps (DRL) will illuminate under the following conditions:
• | The ignition is ON. |
• | The light switch is OFF. |
• | The park brake is released. |
When the exterior lights are illuminated, the DRL will turn OFF automatically.
To turn off the DRL when idling, apply the park brake.
To turn the parking lamps ON move the headlamp switch to the first position. Turn the parking lamps OFF by turning the headlamp switch to the OFF position.
When you activate the turn signals, the appropriate turn signal lamps flash to signal a turn. The front, the rear, and the side turn signals work only when the ignition is ON.
The front and the rear turn signals are controlled by the multifunction lever on the left side of the steering column. Moving the lever all the way up or down past the detent will turn ON the turn signals. When the turn is complete, the lever will automatically release, and the front and the rear turn signals will stop flashing.
For changing lanes or for shallow turns in which the steering wheel does not turn far enough to cancel the signal, move the lever to the first detent and hold the lever in that position. The turn signal will cancel when you release the lever.
The fog lamp switch is on the instrument panel (I/P) above the audio system. To use the fog lamps, first turn ON the headlamps. Then, push the fog lamp toggle switch. The indicator light in the instrument cluster will illuminate to indicate that the fog lamps are ON. Push the toggle switch again to turn OFF the fog lamps. The indicator light will then go OFF.
Aim the fog lamps for proper illumination of the road. Verify the fog lamp aim when a new bulb is installed or if service or repairs to the front end may have disturbed the fog lamp assembly or the mountings.
The tail lamps, stop lamps, backup lamps, and turn signals are part of a single assembly. Turning ON either the headlamps or the parking lamps will also turn ON the tail lamps. When the brake pedal is pushed, the tail lamps will glow more brightly to serve as stop lamps.
The center high mounted stop lamp is in the rear window and will turn ON when you press the brake pedal.
The backup lamps will come ON when you shift the transaxle into reverse.
• | On a vehicle with an automatic transaxle, the backup lamps are activated by the park/neutral position switch. |
• | On a vehicle with a manual transaxle, the lamps are activated by a reverse switch which is part of the transaxle. |
The license plate lamps will turn ON when the headlamps or the parking lamps are turned ON. The license plate lamps are mounted on the rear deck lid, above the license plate.
The battery saver ensures that the parking lamps are turned off even if the driver forgets to turn the lamps OFF.
The parking lamp is turned ON by the headlamp switch when the ignition key is in the ON position. After the driver turns the ignition key OFF and opens the driver side door, the parking lamp automatically turns OFF.
