The engine air cleaner/filter is located in the engine compartment on the passenger's side of the vehicle. See Engine Compartment Overview for more information on location.

When to Inspect the Engine Air Cleaner/Filter

Inspect the air cleaner/filter at the Maintenance II intervals and replace it at the first oil change after each 50,000 mile (83 000 km) interval. See Scheduled Maintenance for more information. If you are driving in dusty/dirty conditions, inspect the filter at each engine oil change.

How to Inspect the Engine Air Cleaner/Filter

To inspect the air cleaner/filter remove the filter from the vehicle and lightly shake the filter to release loose dust and dirt. If the filter remains caked with dirt, a new filter is required.

  3. Disconnect the air flow sensor electrical connector.

  4. Object Number: 1395659 Size: B3
  5. Disconnect the crank case ventilation tube.
  6. Loosen the screws on the clamps holding the air outlet duct in place. Do not pry the clamps off.

  7. Object Number: 1395660 Size: B3
  8. Remove the air outlet duct.

  9. Object Number: 1395661 Size: B3
  10. Undo the clamps on the filter cover. To remove the cover, pull up on the front and then pull the cover out.
  11. Inspect or replace the engine air cleaner/filter.
  12. Wipe all dust from inside of the housing and inspect the air cleaner and air outlet duct for cracks, cuts, and deterioration. The air outlet duct must be replaced if damaged.

  13. Reinstall the filter cover and latch the clamps.
  14. Reattach the air outlet duct and tighten the screws on the clamps that hold the duct in place.
  15. Reconnect the crank case ventilation tube.
  16. Reconnect the air flow sensor electrical connector.

Caution: Operating the engine with the air cleaner/filter off can cause you or others to be burned. The air cleaner not only cleans the air; it helps to stop flames if the engine backfires. If it is not there and the engine backfires, you could be burned. Do not drive with it off, and be careful working on the engine with the air cleaner/filter off.

Notice: If the air cleaner/filter is off, a backfire can cause a damaging engine fire. And, dirt can easily get into the engine, which will damage it. Always have the air cleaner/filter in place when you are driving.
