05 Chevrolet Equinox Water Leak from Headliner or Map Light - kw GMT191 lamp roof dome sunroof pillar mirror CF5 Onstar CE1 antenna cable seal

Subject:05 Chevrolet Equinox Water Leak from Headliner or Map Light

Models:.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom described in the PI.

Condition/Concern:

Water may leak from the headliner or map light on vehicles with RPO CF5 (sunroof) or CE1 (Onstar).

Recommendation/Instructions:

If the customer complains of water dripping from the map lights, the following investigation should take place.

  1. If the vehicle is equipped with OnStar, check to confirm the antenna is firmly secured. Water can be run over the antenna to confirm it is not leaking onto the dome lamps.
  2. If the vehicle is not equipped with OnStar or a check of the antenna fails to produce a leak, the condition of the sunroof drain hoses will need to be checked. To do this, the sunroof must be opened and the dual lock fasteners along the front edge must be released.
  3. After the dual lock fasteners are released, the front edge of the headliner can be carefully pulled down to visually inspect the sunroof drain hoses at the left and right front corners of the sunroof module.
  4. The sunroof drain hoses must be pointing downward from the connection to the sunroof module to ensure water can quickly drain away and to prevent stress on the connecting joint at the sunroof module. If the drain hose is not pointing downward, the stressed joint will slowly drip water onto the headliner and this water can get to the map light.
  5. To correct the condition it is not necessary to remove the headliner. However, the A pillar trim on the affected side will need to be removed.
  6. With the A pillar trim is removed, it will make it possible to observe the position of the sunroof drain hose. To correctly position the hose, release it from the mastic patch on the pillar and the clip. Gently pull the hose downward until the hose at the sunroof module is pointing downward. After confirming, securely seat the hose back into the mastic patch and the clip.
  7. Test the joint for leakage by pouring a small amount of water into the sunroof module area by the drain connection. Watch the joint for signs of leakage. If some leakage is evident, the drain may still be pointing slightly upward. It may be necessary to remove the visor to allow more freedom of movement to rotate or position the drain hose so that it is pointing downward, thus allowing water to drain away quickly.
  8. If the leak cannot be stopped, it will be necessary to remove the drain hose and seal it to the module. With the visor removed and the B pillar upper trim removed, it is possible to get enough movement in the headliner to access the drain hose for sealing.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance.
