Subject:2005 Chevrolet Equinox Produced and Serviced with 2006 Model Year Transaxles RPOs M09 (FWD) and M45 (AWD) and 2006 Calibrations

Models:2005 Chevrolet Equinox

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some 2005 model year Chevrolet Equinox produced in June 2005 were built with model year 2006 automatic transaxles and calibrations. Breakpoints for AWD and FWD are:

    • AWD (M45) beginning with VIN (last 8 digits) 56201441
    • FWD (M09) beginning with VIN (last 8 digits) 56204410

Positive identification of the correct model year transaxle can be made by viewing the Aisin transaxle metal ID tag on the transaxle by standing in front of the vehicle on the driver's side. Use a flashlight and look between the battery box and the engine to see the part number on the metal tag just rearward of the pop rivet. The part number is broken into two rows of numbers within this area of the transaxle metal tag

Recommendation/Instructions:

Service parts will continue to be available, however, as GMSPO stock of transaxle assemblies is depleted, a 2006 Service Replacement Transmission Assembly will replace the 2005 service part number. It becomes critical to properly determine which transaxle production part number is in the vehicle prior to servicing for purpose of determining which calibration should be in the vehicle.

If a 2006 service replacement transaxle is being installed in a 2005 Equinox, the technician must contact TCSC with the VIN and the production part number from the metal tag on the replacement transaxle. TCSC will furnish a VCI number to allow correct reprogramming of the TCM. 2005 Equinox produced with 2006 transaxles are automatically in the SPS database and include all 2006 calibration changes.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
