Fuel Gauge Incorrect or Inoperative and/or Service Engine Soon (SES) Lamp Illuminated with DTC P0463 Set (Inspect Secondary Fuel Level Sender Connection, Replace Primary Fuel Pump Module, If Necessary

Some customers may comment on an incorrect or inoperative fuel gauge or a Service Engine Soon lamp, with DTC P0463 set. An incorrect indication would typically be the indication of less than full when the tank is full (i.e. gauge indicates ¾ tank when full).

This condition may be caused by intermittent or poor contact between the primary fuel pump connector and secondary fuel level sensor.

Disconnect the secondary fuel level sensor wire from the primary fuel pump module and inspect the connector for loose contacts.

If the connector has loose contacts, replace the primary fuel pump module.

1. Remove the primary fuel pump module. Refer to "Fuel Tank Module Replacement - Primary."

Important: There are two 2-way connectors on the bottom side of the primary fuel pump module flange. The secondary fuel level sensor connector is the one that does NOT go to the fuel level sensor mounted on the primary fuel pump module.

2. Disconnect the fuel level sensor wire from the primary fuel pump module.



3. Inspect the connector for loose contacts. If it is possible to see straight through the connector (see left connector in illustration), then contact may be loose. Electrical contacts should fill the entire cavity, as shown in right connector in illustration. Check the terminal contacts using J 43907-100 gray probe tool (male), from J 43907 Connector Test Adapter Kit. If the probe tool is loose and will not be retained by the connector, the contacts are loose.
4. If the connector contacts are loose, replace the primary fuel pump module. Refer to "Fuel Tank Module Replacement - Primary."

5. Verify that the customer concern has been resolved.
