Information on 2008 Chevrolet Equinox FWD and AWD Models with Transposed Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Position Six (6) Descriptions

The 2008 Model Year production of the Chevrolet Equinox started with the character '1' in position number six of the VIN for a 1LF26 model described as a 'FWD LS' (Front Wheel Drive, LS trim package). The year also started with a code of '2' in position six to describe a 1LG26 model as an 'AWD LS' (All Wheel Drive, LS trim package).

In early October as GM was implementing an expansion of model descriptor codes, these models were transposed in the computerized VIN logic, resulting in code '1' now being assigned to the All Wheel Drive model 1LG26 and code '2' now being assigned to the 1LF26 Front Wheel Drive model. This change in codes assigned to the models led to some confusion as dealers now had some FWD and AWD units that used the same code.

To address any confusion, it was decided to reverse the change and once again have the FWD described as a '1' and the AWD described as a '2.' This would agree with the Service Operations VIN System card that was issued at the beginning of the Model Year and is frequently used by dealers and others.

As a result of this reversal, the following VIN breakpoints may assist in eliminating any confusion as to what vehicles had which code assigned.

Starting with VINs ending in 86311940, code '1' again represents a 1LF26 FWD LS model and code '2' represents a 1LG26 AWD LS model.
