Removal Procedure

  1. Using J 39914 rotate the drive belt tensioner (8) to release the tension on the drive belt.
  2. Remove the drive belt from the right idler pulley (2).
  3. Carefully release J 39914 to relieve the drive belt tensioner spring tension.
  4. Remove J 39914 from the drive belt tensioner (8).
  5. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  6. Remove the right front wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  7. Remove the wheelhouse liner. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement.

  9. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Replacement.
  10. Install the EN-49010 to the starter mounting holes.

  11. Object Number: 1317156  Size: SH
  12. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt and washer.

  13. Object Number: 909522  Size: SH

    Caution: The inertial weight section of the crankshaft balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber type material. The correct installation procedures (with the proper tool) must be followed or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning of the crankshaft balancer.

    Caution: Do NOT use a power-assisted tool with the special tool in order to remove or install this component. You cannot properly control the alignment of this component using a power-assisted tool, and this can damage the component.

  14. Remove the crankshaft balancer using the J 41816-A along with EN 46359 .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 909647  Size: SH
  1. Apply sealer GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148) or the equivalent, to the keyway of the crankshaft balancer.
  2. Place the crankshaft balancer into position over the key in the crankshaft.
  3. Caution: Do NOT use a power-assisted tool with the special tool in order to remove or install this component. You cannot properly control the alignment of this component using a power-assisted tool, and this can damage the component.

  4. Install the J 29113 onto the crankshaft.
  5. Rotate the hex nut on the J 29113 to install the crankshaft balancer onto the crankshaft.
  6. Remove the J 29113 from the crankshaft.
  7. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  8. Install the used crankshaft balancer bolt and tighten to 125 N·m (92 lb ft).
  9. Remove the used crankshaft balancer bolt.
  10. Install a NEW crankshaft balancer bolt.
  11. 8.1. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt a first pass to 125 N·m (92 lb ft).
    8.2. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt a final pass to 130 degrees using the J 45059 .

  12. Remove the EN-49010 from the starter mounting holes.
  13. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Replacement.
  14. Install the wheelhouse liner. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement.
  15. Install the right front wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  16. Lower the vehicle.

  18. Ensure the drive belt is properly centered on all the pulleys except the right idler pulley (3).
  19. Using J 39914 rotate the drive belt tensioner away from the drive belt.
  20. Install the drive belt to the right idler pulley (2).
  21. Carefully release J 39914 allowing the drive belt tensioner (8) to come in contact with the drive belt.
  22. Remove J 39914 from the drive belt tensioner (8).
  23. Inspect the drive belt to insure the belt is properly centered on all the pulleys (1-8).
