Removal Procedure

Important: Before a new seal is installed, the CDR and the crankcase ventilation system should be thoroughly inspected and the crankcase pressure should also be checked. Refer to Engine Controls.

Tools Required

J 39084 Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal Installer

  1. Open the hood.
  2. Disconnect the battery negative cables from the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the transmission from the vehicle. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission-4L80-E.
  4. Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft. Refer to Engine Flywheel Removal .

  5. Object Number: 55077  Size: SH
  6. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal from the engine block.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 60280  Size: SH

    Important: Coat the crankshaft surface with clean engine oil, and lightly coat the sealing area of the new oil seal with engine oil or grease before installing the new oil seal. Do not scratch or nick the sealing edge of the oil seal.

  1. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal into the tool, with the spring cavity towards the engine, onto the crankshaft.
  2. Use the J 39084 , to install the crankshaft rear oil seal in the engine block.
  3. Install the flywheel on to the crankshaft. Refer to Engine Flywheel Installation .
  4. Install the transmission in the vehicle. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission-4L80-E.
  5. Connect the battery negative cables to the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
