Has the Starting System Check been performed?

  1. Place the transmission in PARK.
  2. Connect a J 39200
  3. Place the ignition switch in the START position and measure the voltage.

Does battery voltage exist?

--

Go to Step 3

Go to Step 5

  1. Clean the starter motor mounting bolts, starter motor, and mounting surface. Refer to Starter Motor Inspection
  2. Repeat the test in Step 1.

Does the engine now start?

--

System OK

Go to Step 4

Replace the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

Is repair successful?

--

System OK

Go to Step 5

  1. Remove the starter relay from the underhood fuse-relay socket.
  2. Connect an unpowered test lamp between the starter relay socket cavity A6 and a known good ground.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 7

  1. Locate and repair open in the RED (242) wire between IGN-A fuse and the starter relay.
  2. Install the starter relay.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

  1. Disconnect the PPL (6) wire from the starter solenoid terminal S.
  2. Using a J 39200

Is continuity present?

--

Go to Step 9

  1. Locate and repair open in PPL (6) wire between the starter relay and the starter solenoid.
  2. Install the starter relay.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

  1. Connect the PPL (6) wire at the starter solenoid terminal S.
  2. Using a J 39200

Is continuity present?

--

Go to Step 11

  1. Locate and repair open in BLK (150) wire between starter relay and ground G103.
  2. Install the starter relay.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

  1. Place the transmission in PARK.
  2. Connect the unpowered test lamp from the starter relay socket cavity B6 and a known good ground.
  3. Place the ignition switch in the START position.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 12

Replace the starter relay.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

  1. Disconnect connector C1 at the park/neutral position switch.
  2. Connect a J 39200
  3. Place the transmission in PARK.

Is continuity present?

--

Go to Step 15

Replace the park/neutral safety switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement or Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement .

Is the repair complete?

Place the transmission in NEUTRAL.

Connect a J 39200

Locate and repair the open in the YEL (1737) wire between the park/neutral position switch and the starter relay.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Disconnect connector C200 at the steering column.
  2. Connect an unpowered test lamp between connector C200 cavity D5 and a known good ground.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 20

Locate and repair the open in RED (242) wire between the IGN-A fuse and connector C200.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

Connect a J 39200

Is continuity present?

Locate and repair the open in the RED (1442) wire or YEL (5) wire in the steering column. If both wires are good, replace the ignition switch.

Are the repairs complete?

Locate and repair the open in the YEL (5)/ PPL (806) wire between connector C200 and the park/neutral switch.

Is the repair complete?
