Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 188406  Size: SH
  1. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands.
  2. Remove the oil filter from the oil filter adapter (four wheel drive only).

  3. Object Number: 181988  Size: SH
  4. Remove the oil filter from the oil filter fitting (two wheel drive ).
  5. Remove the drain plug from the oil pan.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the oil filter to the oil filter fitting (2wheel drive only).
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the oil filter to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

    Important: When servicing a vehicle equipped with four wheel drive, retighten the oil filter adapter to 65 N·m (47 lb ft) after installing a new oil filter.

  3. Install the oil filter to the oil filter adapter (4wheel drive vehicles only).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the oil filter to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  5. Install the drain plug to the oil pan.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the drain plug to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  7. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.
  8. Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
  9. Important: When performing an oil filter and oil change on a 6.5L diesel engine, use only 8 quarts of oil. This will bring the oil level between "ADD" and "FULL", which is normal. Start the vehicle and wait until the engine reaches normal operating temperature. Shut the vehicle off and wait a minimum of 15 minutes before checking the oil level. It should read "Full" or very close to "Full". Do not check the oil level when the engine is cold, a false reading will occur. Adding engine oil to read "FULL" on a cold engine.
