J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin

Removal Procedure

    Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.

  1. Install the J 42640 in the steering column lower access hole.

  2. Object Number: 284408  Size: SH
  3. Remove the protective cover from the steering column under the Instrument Panel to gain access to the bolt.
  4. Remove the bolt (3) retaining the intermediate shaft (2) to the steering column (1).

  5. Object Number: 309837  Size: SH

    Caution: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.

  6. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with suitable safety stands.
  7. Mark the Intermediate Shaft to Steering Gear alignment before removal.
  8. Position the intermediate shaft cover (1) for access to the lower shaft pinch bolt. Turn the steering wheel to allow access to the pinch bolt.

  9. Object Number: 309836  Size: SH
  10. Remove the intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3) from the steering gear stub shaft.
  11. Remove the intermediate shaft from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Make sure to align the marks made at removal.
  2. Install the intermediate shaft (1) to the steering gear stub shaft.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3) to the steering gear stub shaft.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the intermediate shaft retaining bolt to the steering gear stub shaft to 61 N·m (45 lb ft).

  5. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle.

  6. Object Number: 284408  Size: SH
  7. Install the intermediate shaft (2) to the steering column (1).
  8. Important: Make sure the upper cover to the steering column is inside the intermediate shaft cover.

  9. Install the intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3) to the steering column (1).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the intermediate shaft bolt to the steering column to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  11. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column lower access hole.
