Subject:Diagnostic Information on Antilock Brake System (ABS) Diagnostic Trouble Code(s) (DTC) C0035, C0040, C0050, C0055 and/or P0609

Models:2003-2005 Chevrolet Express Van Models

When diagnosing an "ABS light on" condition, diagnosis with a scan tool may reveal a DTC C0035, C0040, C0050, C0055 and/or P0609.

It has been found that Electronic Brake Control Modules (EBCM) have been incorrectly replaced when the actual concern was related to the ABS system wiring.

prior to thoroughly inspecting the ABS wiring system.

Important:  It has been found that EBCMs have been incorrectly replaced when the true condition was related to the ABS system wiring.

When diagnosing DTCs related to wheel speed sensor issues, first thoroughly inspect connections or circuitry that may cause an intermittent malfunction. Most intermittent conditions are caused by faulty electrical connections or wiring. Inspect for the following items:

    • Wiring broken inside the insulation
    • Poor connection between the male and female terminal at a connector
    • Poor terminal to wire connection -- some conditions that fall under this description are poor crimps, poor solder joints, crimping over the wire insulation rather than the wire itself and corrosion in the wire to terminal contact area.
    • Wire insulation that is rubbed through -- this may cause an intermittent short as the bare area touches other wiring or parts of the vehicle.

If the customer's concern is that the ABS indicator is on only during humid conditions such as rain, snow or vehicle washes, thoroughly inspect the wheel speed sensor circuits for signs of water intrusion.
