A sensor mounted in the bottom of the fuel filter housing is use to detect water in the fuel. The water in fuel (WIF) sensor has an indicator control circuit and a low reference circuit. The engine control module (ECM) monitors the voltage to the WIF sensor. If the voltage is incorrect, the ECM will illuminate the WIF lamp and set the appropriate DTC.
The engine is running.
• | The engine is running. |
• | The WIF sensor voltage is less than 0.20 volt for more than 1 second. |
• | The control module stores the DTC information into memory when the diagnostic runs and fails. |
• | The malfunction indication lamp (MIL) will not illuminate. |
• | The control module records the operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. The control module stores this information in the Failure Records. |
• | The water in fuel lamp will illuminate in the instrument panel. |
• | A current DTC Last Test Failed clears when the diagnostic runs and passes. |
• | A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles, if no failures are reported by this or any other non-emission related diagnostic. |
• | The DTC has been cleared with a scan tool, and the key has been cycled OFF in order to allow the ECM to power down. |
The water in the fuel will not set this DTC, but the water in fuel lamp will illuminate if this DTC sets.
⇒ | If this DTC resets, test the indictor control circuit for high resistance or a short to ground. |
⇒ | If the DTC does not reset, refer to Water-in-Fuel Lamp Always On . |
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
