Preliminary Procedures

  1. Remove the instrument panel (I/P) insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Replacement.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
  3. Without disconnecting the wiring harness connectors, reposition the electrical center and powertrain control modules from the underhood electrical center bracket and remove the bracket from the vehicle. Refer to Underhood Electrical Center or Junction Block Bracket Replacement .
  4. Without disconnecting the brake pipes from the master cylinder, reposition the master cylinder assembly to allow for the removal of the vacuum brake booster. Refer to Master Cylinder Replacement.

Brake Booster Pushrod Retaining Clip

Tip
Loosen the brake booster mounting nuts to aid in releasing the pushrod from the brake pedal.

Brake Booster Pushrod Washer

Tip

    • Disconnect the brake booster pushrod from the brake pedal.
    • Before installing the brake booster pushrod to the brake pedal, apply a thin coat of high temperature grease GM P/N 12345996 (Canadian P/N 10953501) to the pushrod pin on the brake pedal.

Vacuum Brake Booster Mounting Nut (Qty: 4)

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

Tighten
22 N·m (16 lb ft)

Vacuum Brake Booster

Tip

    • Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose from the brake booster check valve.
    • If the brake booster is to be reused, inspect the brake booster to dash panel gasket for damage. Replace the gasket if necessary.
    • Inspect the master cylinder to brake booster square cut seal for damage. Replace the seal if necessary.
    • Ensure the master cylinder to vacuum booster square cut seal is properly seated in the groove in the master cylinder body.
