Catalytic Converter Replacement LE5,L61

Removal Procedure

Notice: Do not bend the exhaust flex decoupler more than 3 degrees in any direction. Movement of more than 3 degrees will damage the exhaust flex decoupler.


    Object Number: 1631765  Size: SH
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Remove the exhaust muffler nuts.
  3. Pull back the muffler assembly in order to separate the muffler from the catalytic converter.

  4. Object Number: 1625682  Size: SH
  5. Remove the post catalyst heated oxygen sensor (HO2S). Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Replacement for the 2.2L (L61) engine or Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Replacement for the 2.4L engine.
  6. Remove the catalytic converter nuts.
  7. Remove the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold.
  8. Remove and discard the catalytic converter to exhaust manifold gasket.

Installation Procedure

Notice: Do not bend the exhaust flex decoupler more than 3 degrees in any direction. Movement of more than 3 degrees will damage the exhaust flex decoupler.

  1. Install a NEW gasket to the exhaust manifold studs.
  2. Install the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the catalytic converter nuts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 46 N·m (34 lb ft).

  6. Install the post catalyst HO2S. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Replacement for the 2.2L (L61) engine or Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Replacement for the 2.4L engine.

  7. Object Number: 1631765  Size: SH
  8. Pull back the muffler assembly in order to join the muffler to the catalytic converter.
  9. Install the exhaust muffler nuts.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 46 N·m (34 lb ft).

  11. Lower the vehicle.

  2. Remove the HO2S Sensor from the Catalytic Converter. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Replacement .

Turbocharger Exhaust Pipe Nut (Qty: 4)

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

Tighten
50 N·m (37 lb ft)

Catalytic Converter Nut (Qty: 3)

Tighten
46 N·m (34 lb ft)

Procedure

  1. Disconnect any electrical connectors as needed.
  2. Transfer any parts as needed.
