  1. Install the shift rod and bushing.

  2. Object Number: 762370  Size: SH
  3. Install the intermediate shaft needle bearing to the transmission housing using the J 44383  (1) and the J 7079-2  (2).

  4. Object Number: 658858  Size: SH
  5. Install a new shifter shaft bearing flush with the casting in the transmission housing, using the J 44381  (1) and the J 7079-2  (2).

  6. Object Number: 658860  Size: SH

    Important: Do not over apply the threadlocker to the bolt threads.

  7. Apply GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the reverse lockout lever bolt threads.
  8. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Important: The spring (2) fingers must be positioned on either side of the lever (3).

  9. Install the reverse lockout lever (3), spring (2), and the bolt (1) to the transmission housing, if equipped.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 6 N·m (53 lb in).

  11. Install a new differential bearing race to the transmission housing using the J 44385  (2) and the J 7079-2  (1).

  12. Object Number: 660201  Size: SH
  13. Install a new differential side bearing race seal to the transmission housing using the J 44385  (2) and the J 7079-2  (1).

  14. Object Number: 658878  Size: SH
  15. Install the countershaft bearing to the clutch housing using the J 44386  (1) and the J 7079-2  (2).
  16. Install a new snap ring.

  18. Install the input shaft bearing to the clutch housing using the J 44381  (2) and the J 7079-2  (1).

  19. Object Number: 658868  Size: SH
  20. Install the output shaft bearing race and bolts using the J 44387-1 (2), J 44387-2 (3), and the J 8092  (1).
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the output shaft bearing bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  22. Install a new differential bearing race to the clutch housing using the J 44385  (2) and the J 8092  (1).

  23. Object Number: 1518813  Size: SH

    Important: If either the case or shifter detent is damaged, it may be necessary to install a new shifter detent and/or case.

  24. Install the shifter detent into the case if necessary.

  26. Install a new differential output shaft seal to the clutch housing using the J 44385  (2) and the J 8092  (1).

  27. Object Number: 658882  Size: SH

    Important: New change makes it unnecessary to remove snap rings from bearings. Removal of snap rings from bearing destroys the ring. New snap rings are sold with bearings.

  28. When removed, the bearing will retain their snap rings. If purchased NEW, bearing will come with snap ring already installed to bearing.
  29. Install the input shaft and output shaft bearings with snap rings into the transmission housing using the J 44385  (2) and the J 7079-2  (1).

  31. Install the shift forks and the input shaft and output shaft onto the J 44375 .

  33. Install the countershaft and the shift fork onto the J 44375 .
  34. Rotate the shaft to verify all gears are properly meshing.

  36. Install the housing onto the shift forks and the shafts on to the J 44375 . Line up the shift forks and the shafts with the housing.

    Important: Install the transaxle case to the shafts evenly using the J 44376 .

  38. Install the transaxle case to the shafts using the J 44376 .

  40. Shift the transmission into 4th and 5th gear using a screwdriver in an upward direction.
  41. Apply GM P/N 1234549 (Canadian P/N 10953488) or equivalent to the input and output shaft bolts.
  42. Install NEW input and output shaft bolts while holding the transmission into 4th and 5th gear in an upward direction.
  43. Tighten
    Tighten the shaft bolts to 110 N·m (81 lb ft).

    Important: If shimming is required, refer to Shimming Procedures before installing the cover.

  44. Install sealant GM P/N 12346286 (Canadian P/N 10953472) or equivalent to the rear cover.

  45. Object Number: 513914  Size: SH

    Important: The oil guide only installs in one direction. Ensure the oil guide is completely seated in the gear shafts.

  46. Install the oil guide.
  47. Install the rear cover.
  48. Install the rear cover bolt.
  49. Tighten
    Tighten the rear cover bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  50. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) or equivalent to the backup lamp switch.
  51. Install the backup lamp switch into the transaxle case.
  52. Tighten
    Tighten the backup lamp switch to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  53. Turn the transaxle case and the J 44375 over on the table.
  54. Remove the J 44375 from the gear shafts and the shift forks.

  56. Install the oil tube into the transaxle case.

  58. Install the shift rod to the shift fork.

    Important: Use only the approved sealer for the transaxle case to shifter cover mating surface.

  60. Apply sealer GM P/N 12378516 (Canadian P/N 88900757) or equivalent to the transaxle case to shifter cover mating surface.

  61. Object Number: 513882  Size: SH
  62. Install the shifter and the shifter retaining bolts.
  63. Tighten
    Tighten the shifter retaining bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Install all possible shifter bolts with the shifter in the neutral position. Install the last shifter bolt in gear and then shift the transmission back into neutral.

  64. Shift the transmission into neutral.
  65. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) or equivalent to the shifter guide bolt.
  66. Notice: Hand start and tighten the shifter guide bolt to avoid damaging the shift lever.

  67. Install the shifter guide bolt.
  68. Tighten
    Tighten the shifter guide bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  69. Install the differential into the transaxle case.

    Important: The step in the roller bearing faces opposite of the pinion gear.

  71. Install the roller bearing onto the output shaft.

  73. Install the magnet into the transaxle case.

  75. Apply sealant GM P/N 12378516 (Canadian P/N 88900757) or equivalent to the transaxle case to clutch housing mating surface.

  77. Install the clutch housing to the transaxle case.

  79. Install the countershaft into the clutch housing bearing using the J 44389 .

  80. Object Number: 513885  Size: SH
  81. Install the clutch housing to transaxle case bolts.
  82. Tighten
    Tighten the housing bolts to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  83. Turn the transmission over.
  84. Install the transaxle case to clutch housing bolts.
  85. Tighten
    Tighten the housing bolts to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  86. Turn the transmission so the shifter is on top.
  87. Shift the transmission into any gear.

  88. Object Number: 881740  Size: SH
  89. Install the actuator and tube.
  90. Install the actuator and tube bolts.
  91. Tighten
    Tighten the tube bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).


    Object Number: 747503  Size: SH
  92. Apply GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) or equivalent to the transmission drain plug.
  93. Install the transmission drain plug.
  94. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission drain plug to 38 N·m (28 lb ft).

  95. Install the transmission fill cap.

  96. Object Number: 634456  Size: SH
  97. Hold the input shaft with the J 44377 .
  98. Apply GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) or equivalent to the intermediate shaft bolt.
  99. Install the bolt in the intermediate shaft.
  100. Tighten
    Tighten the intermediate shaft bolts to 95 N·m (70 lb ft).

  101. Install a new plastic oil guide into the intermediate shaft.

  102. Object Number: 513872  Size: SH

    Important: Ensure not to press the sealing cap past the bottom of the chamfer.

  103. Use J 24433 to install a new intermediate shaft sealing cap.

  104. Object Number: 658863  Size: SH
  105. Apply GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the vehicle speed sensor bolt.
  106. Install the vehicle speed sensor, seal, and bolt.
  107. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 12 N·m (8 lb ft).

  108. Install the shift cable bracket (4), the isolators (3), the spacers (2) and the bolt (1).
  109. Tighten
    Tighten the shift cable bracket bolt to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).
