Removal Procedure

    Important: Ensure the front wheels are in the straight ahead position and the steering wheel is centered in order to mark the intermediate steering shaft position properly.

  1. Place the steering wheel in the straight ahead position.
  2. Remove the driver knee bolster reinforcement. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Reinforcement Replacement.
  3. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Coil Replacement.
  4. Disconnect any electrical connectors as needed.

    5. Object Number: 854943 Size: SH

    Important: These scribe marks will be needed for proper alignment of the intermediate steering shaft.

  5. Place scribe marks on the intermediate steering shaft and the steering column shaft prior to removal.

  6. Remove the intermediate steering shaft bolt at the steering column and discard the bolt.
  7. Separate the intermediate steering shaft from the steering column shaft.

  8. Remove the steering column pivot bolt.
  9. Remove the steering column mounting bolts.
  10. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
  11. If replacing the steering column then transfer any parts as needed.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 2184305 Size: SH
  1. If you are installing a NEW steering column, align the manufacturer match marks (1) on the lower shaft.
  2. If you are installing a NEW steering column, copy the scribe marks from the old column to the new column.

    3. Object Number: 854962 Size: SH
  3. Position the steering column in the vehicle.
  4. Hand start the steering column pivot bolt.
  5. Hand start the steering column mounting bolts.

    6. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  6. Tighten the steering column bolts using the following order:

    7. Tighten

    1. Tighten the steering column pivot bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the right steering column mounting bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
    3. Tighten the left steering column mounting bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Important: Failure to align the scribed mark on the old or new steering column may result in an off-center steering wheel.

  7. Align the scribed marks on the intermediate steering shaft to the scribed marks on the steering column shaft.
  8. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering column shaft.

    9. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  9. Install a NEW intermediate steering shaft bolt at the steering column.

    10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).

  10. Connect all electrical connectors as needed.
  11. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Coil Replacement.
  12. Install the driver knee bolster reinforcement. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Reinforcement Replacement.
  13. If equipped with RPO JL4, calibrate the steering angle sensor. Refer to Control Module References.
