Brake Pressure Modulator Valve Replacement Without JL4

Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Caution in the Preface section.

Notice: Always connect or disconnect the wiring harness connector from the EBCM/EBTCM with the ignition switch in the OFF position. Failure to observe this precaution could result in damage to the EBCM/EBTCM.

Preliminary Procedures

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Remove the cover from the engine control module (ECM) and the transmission control module (TCM).
  3. Clean the electronic brake control module (EBCM) to brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) area and the brake pipe fitting areas of any accumulated dirt and foreign material.

Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) Electrical Connector

Tip
Lift the slide lock tabs to release the electrical connector from the EBCM.

Fitting, Brake Pipe (Qty: 6)

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

Procedure

  1. Note the location of the brake pipes before removal to aid during installation.
  2. Cap the brake pipe ends and plug the pipe ports on the BPMV to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

Tighten
21 N·m (15 lb ft)

Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV) Bracket Bolt (Qty: 2)

Tip
Loosen but do not remove the forward upper bolt.

Tighten
25 N·m (18 lb ft)

Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV)

Procedure

  1. If installing a new BPMV, remove the EBCM. Refer to Electronic Brake Control Module Replacement .
  2. If installing a new BPMV, remove the bracket from the BPMV. Refer to Brake Pressure Modulator Valve Bracket Replacement .
  3. If installing a new BPMV, install new EBCM to BPMV O-ring seals.
  4. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding .
  5. Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle .
  6. Observe brake pedal feel after performing the diagnostic system check. If the pedal now feels spongy, air may have been in the secondary hydraulic circuit of the brake modulator which may have been introduced into the primary circuit. If the pedal feels spongy, perform the Antilock Brake System Automated Bleed Procedure .

Brake Pressure Modulator Valve Replacement With JL4, LNF

Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Caution in the Preface section.

Removal Procedure

    Notice: Always connect or disconnect the wiring harness connector from the EBCM/EBTCM with the ignition switch in the OFF position. Failure to observe this precaution could result in damage to the EBCM/EBTCM.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Release the charge air cooler inlet pipe from the bracket and position aside without removing the charge air cooler inlet pipe.
  3. Remove the transmission control module (TCM) from the bracket and position aside.
  4. Clean the brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) brake pipe fitting area of any accumulated dirt and foreign material.
  5. Disconnect the electronic brake control module (EBCM) electrical connector.

  7. Disconnect the master cylinder primary brake pipe fitting (1).
  8. Cap the fitting and plug the BPMV inlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  9. Disconnect the master cylinder secondary brake pipe fitting (1).
  10. Cap the fitting and plug the BPMV inlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  11. Disconnect the LF brake pipe fitting (1).
  12. Cap the fitting and plug the BPMV outlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  13. Disconnect the RF brake pipe fitting (1).
  14. Cap the fitting and plug the BPMV outlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  15. Disconnect the RR brake pipe fitting (1).
  16. Cap the fitting and plug the BPMV outlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  17. Disconnect the LR brake pipe fitting (1).
  18. Cap the fitting and plug the BPMV outlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  19. Remove the BPMV bolt (1).
  20. Important: Do not remove the mounting pins unless it is necessary to aid in releasing the modulator assembly from the bracket.

  21. Carefully remove the BPMV assembly from the BPMV bracket insulators by pulling straight upward.
  22. Do not pry against the accumulator covers on the underside of the brake modulator assembly to release the mounting pins from the bracket insulators.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1910368  Size: SH
  1. Install the BPMV assembly to the BPMV bracket until the mounting pins are fully inserted in the bracket insulators.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the BPMV bolt (1).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

  5. Connect the LR brake pipe fitting (1).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  7. Connect the RR brake pipe fitting (1).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  9. Connect the RF brake pipe fitting (1).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  11. Connect the LF brake pipe fitting (1).
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  13. Connect the master cylinder secondary brake pipe fitting (1).
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  15. Connect the master cylinder primary brake pipe fitting (1).
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  17. Connect the EBCM electrical connector.
  18. Install the TCM to the bracket.
  19. Position the charge air cooler inlet pipe to the bracket.
  20. Program the EBCM. Refer to Electronic Brake Control Module Programming and Setup.
  21. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding.
  22. Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle.
  23. Observe the brake pedal feel after performing the diagnostic system check. If the pedal now feels spongy, air may have been in the secondary hydraulic circuit of the brake modulator which may have been introduced into the primary circuit. If the pedal feels spongy, perform the Antilock Brake System Automated Bleed Procedure.

Removal Procedure

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Remove the cover from the engine control module (ECM) and the transmission control module (TCM).
  3. Clean the electronic brake control module (EBCM) to brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) area and the brake pipe fittings of any accumulated dirt and foreign material.
  4. Disconnect the EBCM electrical connector.

  6. Disconnect the master cylinder primary brake pipe fitting (1).
  7. Cap the fitting and plug the BPMV inlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  8. Disconnect the master cylinder secondary brake pipe fitting (1).
  9. Cap the fitting and plug the BPMV inlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  10. Disconnect the LF brake pipe fitting (1).
  11. Cap the fitting and plug the BPMV outlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  12. Disconnect the RF brake pipe fitting (1).
  13. Cap the fitting and plug the BPMV outlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  14. Disconnect the RR brake pipe fitting (1).
  15. Cap the fitting and plug the BPMV outlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  17. Cap the fitting and plug the BPMV outlet port to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  2. Object Number: 1910368  Size: SH
  3. Install the BPMV assembly to the BPMV bracket until the mounting pins are fully inserted in the bracket insulators.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install the BPMV bolt (1).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

  8. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

    Tighten the fitting to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  11. Connect the RF brake pipe fitting (1).
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  13. Connect the LF brake pipe fitting (1).
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  15. Connect the master cylinder secondary brake pipe fitting (1).
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  17. Connect the master cylinder primary brake pipe fitting (1).
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  19. Connect the EBCM electrical connector.
  20. Install the cover to the ECM and the TCM.
  21. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding.
  22. Program the EBCM. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS).
  23. Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle.
  24. Observe the brake pedal feel after performing the diagnostic system check. If the pedal now feels spongy, air may have been in the secondary hydraulic circuit of the brake modulator which may have been introduced into the primary circuit. If the pedal feels spongy, perform the Antilock Brake System Automated Bleed Procedure.
