Passenger Presence System Preload Test PPS Setup

Introduction

The Passenger Presence System (PPS) requires checking for preloads within each region when the system has been serviced or replaced. If the passenger seat bottom cushion, seat bottom trim, or heater pad has been serviced, reinstalled, or removed for any reason, the procedure below will check for any preloads on the PPS. The PPS module cannot be tested for preload until it is unlocked using SPS programming. A service replacement PPS module does not require an unlock procedure prior to an initial preload test. Once a preload test has been performed, the PPS module will lock regardless of a pass or fail status. If a module needs to be retested, it must first be unlocked with SPS programming. Before you start, read these procedures carefully and completely. For further information regarding the PPS, refer to SIR System Description and Operation.

Passenger Presence System Preload System Test Procedure (New Module)

  1. Empty the front outboard passenger seat.
  2. With the scan tool, perform the Preload Passenger Presence System procedure.
  3. If the test fails, adjust the seat bottom trim, and massage the cover to ensure unwanted pressure is not present in the specified area. Proceed to the Passenger Presence System Preload Test (Existing Module) to retest after adjustment is made.
  4. Once the test successfully completes, cycle the ignition key OFF.
  5. Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle after successfully completing the preload test procedure to ensure the system is functioning properly.

Passenger Presence System Preload System Test Procedure (Existing Module)

  1. With Service Programming System (SPS) , unlock the PPS module.
  2. Empty the front outboard passenger seat.
  3. With the scan tool, perform the Preload Passenger Presence System procedure.
  4. If the test fails, adjust the seat bottom trim, and massage the cover to ensure unwanted pressure is not present in the specified area, and restart the Passenger Presence System Preload Test (Existing Module).
  5. Once the test successfully completes, cycle the ignition key OFF.
  6. Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle after successfully completing the preload test procedure to ensure the system is functioning properly.

Passenger Presence System Preload Test PPS Rezero

Introduction

The Inflatable Restraints Passenger Presence System (PPS) is a calibrated system that requires rezeroing anytime the seat cushion trim attachments have been removed or the PPS has been replaced. The procedures below are designed to assist in the rezeroing of the PPS. Before you start, read these procedures carefully and completely. For further information regarding the PPS refer to SIR System Description and Operation.

Important: The following procedures must be followed:

  1. Read this procedure carefully and completely.
  2. The PPS will not function properly if the PPS rezeroing procedure is not performed.
  3. Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle after successfully completing the rezeroing procedure to ensure the system is functioning properly.

Passenger Presence System (PPS) Rezeroing Procedure

Important: Before rezeroing the PPS, the front passenger seat must be completely empty of all items. The presence of any items on the front passenger seat will affect the calibration and operation of the PPS.

Important: When rezeroing the PPS, the instrument panel cluster (IPC), and Passenger Air Bag ON/OFF indicator will begin dimming ON and OFF. This is normal operation during the rezeroing procedure and does not indicate additional system faults.

  1. Empty the front outboard passenger seat.
  2. Verify that all SIR and PPS components, connectors, and connector position assurances (CPAs) are properly connected and mounted.
  3. Install a scan tool.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  5. Important: All SIR and PPS DTCs must be cleared before rezeroing the PPS. The presence of current or history DTCs will prevent the PPS from rezeroing and may set additional DTCs.

  6. Use the scan tool in order to clear the SIR and PPS DTCs.
  7. With a scan tool, request the PPS rezeroing procedure.
  8. Initiate the PPS rezeroing procedure. The PPS will illuminate both PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicators until the rezeroing procedure has been completed.
  9. • When the rezeroing procedure has been successfully completed, the PPS will display the current system status.
    • If the rezeroing procedure was unsuccessful, both PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicators will alternate from no illumination to full illumination in 1 second intervals for 5 seconds. The PPS will treat an unsuccessful rezero attempt as a system fault.
  10. If the rezeroing procedure was unsuccessful, repeat this procedure. Due to the communication status between the SDM and the PPS module, this procedure may have to be repeated until a successful rezero attempt has been achieved.
  11. After the PPS has been successfully rezeroed, perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle.
