Removal Procedure

    Note: Ensure the front wheels are in the straight ahead position and the steering wheel is centered in order to mark the intermediate steering shaft position properly.

  1. Place the steering wheel in the straight ahead position.
  2. Remove the driver knee bolster reinforcement. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Reinforcement Replacement.
  3. Remove the steering wheel inflatable restraint module coil. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Coil Replacement.
  4. Disconnect any electrical connectors as needed.

  5. Object Number: 854943  Size: SH

    Note: These scribe marks will be needed for proper alignment of the intermediate steering shaft.

  6. Place scribe marks on the intermediate steering shaft and the steering column shaft.

  7. Object Number: 854769  Size: SH
  8. Remove the intermediate steering shaft bolt at the steering column.
  9. Discard the bolt.

  10. Separate the intermediate steering shaft from the steering column shaft.

  11. Object Number: 854962  Size: SH
  12. Remove the steering column pivot bolt.
  13. Remove the steering column mounting bolts.
  14. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
  15. Transfer any parts as necessary.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 2184305  Size: SH
  1. If you are installing a NEW steering column, align the manufacturer match marks (1) on the lower shaft.
  2. If you are installing a NEW steering column, copy the scribe marks from the old column to the new column.

  3. Object Number: 854962  Size: SH
  4. Position the steering column in the vehicle.
  5. Hand start the steering column pivot bolt.
  6. Hand start the steering column mounting bolts.
  7. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  8. Tighten the steering column pivot bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
  9. Tighten the right steering column mounting bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
  10. Tighten the left steering column mounting bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  11. Object Number: 854769  Size: SH

    Note: Failure to align the scribed mark on the old or new steering column may result in an off-center steering wheel.

  12. Align the scribed marks on the intermediate steering shaft to the scribed marks on the steering column shaft.
  13. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering column shaft.
  14. Install a new intermediate steering shaft bolt at the steering column and tighten to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).
  15. Connect all of the electrical connectors.
  16. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Coil Replacement.
  17. Install the driver knee bolster reinforcement. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Reinforcement Replacement.
  18. If equipped with RPO JL4, calibrate the steering angle sensor. Refer to Control Module References.
