GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT A DEFECT WHICH RELATES TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY EXISTS IN SOME 1981 FULL SIZE CHEVROLETS EQUIPPED WITH GASOLINE ENGINES. THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN ASSEMBLED WITH A BRAKE PEDAL SUPPORT BRACKET DESIGNED FOR USE IN DIESEL ENGINE EQUIPPED VEHICLES. THE INCORRECT BRACKET CAN CAUSE THE SERVICE BRAKES TO REMAIN IN A PARTIALLY APPLIED POSITION, RESULTING IN BRAKE OVERHEATING AND REDUCED BRAKE EFFECTIVENESS. IF THIS CONDITION OCCURS ON THESE VEHICLES AT A TIME WHEN MINIMUM STOPPING DISTANCE IS REQUIRED, A VEHICLE CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING COULD OCCUR.
TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, DEALERS ARE TO INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE BRAKE PEDAL SUPPORT BRACKET ON ALL SUSPECT VEHICLES FOLLOWING THE SERVICE PROCEDURE OF THIS BULLETIN.
VEHICLES INVOLVED
INVOLVED ARE CERTAIN 1981 FULL SIZE CHEVROLETS EQUIPPED WITH GASOLINE ENGINE AND ARE WITHIN THE FOLLOWING VEHICLE BREAKPOINTS:
PLANT FROM THROUGH
JANESVILLE 1G1AL69KOBJ100002 1G1AN69J7B104236
VEHICLES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED BY VEHICLE IDENTIFICAITON NUMBER COMPUTER LISTINGS. THE LISTINGS HAVE BEEN FURNISHED TO INVOLVED DEALERS WITH THE CAMPAIGN BULLETIN. ANY DEALER NOT RECEIVING A COMPUTER LISTING WITH THE CAMPAIGN BULLETIN WAS NOT SHIPPED ANY INVOLVED VEHICLES.
OWNER NOTIFICAITON
NO OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL BE REQUIRED SINCE ALL INVOLVED VEHICLES ARE IN DEALER STOCK.
DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY
ALL INVOLVED VEHICLES ARE NOT TO BE SOLD BY THE DEALER UNTIL CAMPAIGN MODIFICATION HAS BEEN COMPLETED.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
IT WILL FIRST BE NECESSARY TO IDENTIFY THOSE VEHICLES WHICH WERE PRODUCED WITH THE INCORRECT BRACKET. THIS CAN BE DONE BY A VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE BRAKE PEDAL SUPPORT BRACKET LOCATED UNDER THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. BOTH THE CORRECT AND THE INCORRECT BRACKETS ARE SHOWN IN FIGURE 1.
IF DURING THE INSPECTION PROCEDURE, IT IS DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH THE INCORRECT BRACKET THEN BRACKET REPLACEMENT WILL BE NECESSARY AND CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY PERFORMING THE FOLLOWING SERVICE PROCEDURE.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
SEE FIGURE 2 FOR CLARIFICATION
1. DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.
2. REMOVE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH AND CRUISE CONTROL VACUUM VLAVE IF SO EQUIPPED.
3. REMOVE PUSH ROD RETAINER AND DISCONNECT PUSH ROD.
4. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN LOWER COVER (RUBBER BOOT).
5. REMOVE THE UPPER BRACKET TO PLENUM BRACKET SCREW.
6. REMOVE THE WIRING HARNESS CLIP ATTACHING NUT AND THE FOUR ATTACHING BOOSTER STUD TO BRACKET NUTS.
7. SLIGHTLY PULL BOOSTER AND MASTER CYLINDER ASSEMBLY AWAY FROM COWL (APPROXIMATELY 1/2 INCH).
8. REMOVE BRAKE PEDAL SUPPORT BRACKET.
9. TRANSFER BRAKE PEDAL, BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH RETAINER AND CRUISE CONTROL VALVE RETAINER IF SO EQUIPPED, TO NEW SUPPORT BRACKET P/N 25508251.
1. REUSING THE EXISTING ATTACHING PARTS, REVERSE THE REMOVAL PROCEDURE STEPS 8 THROUGH 3 FOR INSTALLATION. SEE FIGURE 2 FOR REQUIRED TORQUE VALUES.
2. INSTALLATION AND ADJUSTMENT OF THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH AND CRUISE CONTROL VACUUM VALVE IF SO EQUIPPED.
THE SWITCH AND VALVE MOUNTING PROVIDE FOR AUTOMATIC ADJUSTMENT WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS MANUALLY RETURNED TO ITS MECHANICAL STOP AS FOLLOWS:
A. WITH BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED, INSERT SWITCH AND VALVE ASSEMBLIES INTO TUBULAR CLIPS UNTIL SWITCH BODY AND VALVE ASSEMBLY SEATS ON TUBE CLIP. NOTE THE AUDIBLE "CLICKS" CAN BE HEARD AS THREADED PORTION OF SWITCH AND VALVE ARE PUSHED THROUGH THE CLIP TOWARD THE BRAKE PEDAL.
B. PULL BRAKE PEDAL FULLY REARWARD AGAINST PEDAL STOP, UNTIL AUDIBLE "CLICK" SOUNDS CAN NO LONGER BE HEARD. SWITCH AND VALVE ASSEMBLY WILL BE MOVED IN TUBULAR CLIP PROVIDING PROPER ADJUSTMENT.
3. DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL, AND THEN REPEAT STEP B TO ASSURE THAT NO AUDIBLE "CLICK" SOUNDS REMAIN.
4. INSTALL NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
