Removal Procedure

Notice: Refer to Engine Emission Notice in the Preface section.

  1. Relieve fuel pressure from fuel rail. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief in Engine Controls -- 3.4L.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body Front End.
  4. Remove the cross vehicle brace. Refer to Cross Vehicle Brace Replacement in Body Front End.
  5. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct and the mass air flow sensor from the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  6. Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  7. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  8. Disconnect the brake booster hose from the upper intake manifold.
  9. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the following:
  10. • The heated oxygen sensor (HO2S1)
    • The AIR check valve solenoid (if equipped)
    • The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve
    • The Evaporative Emissions Canister Purge Solenoid valve
    • The Throttle Position (TP) sensor
    • The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
    • The generator
    • The ignition coil
    • The wiring harness grounds
    • The two body wiring harness-to-engine harness connectors
  11. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  12. Remove the lower radiator air baffle. Refer to Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors in Engine Cooling.
  13. Remove the right engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  14. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  15. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  16. Remove the oil filter.
  17. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the following:
  18. • The vehicle speed sensor
    • The oil level sensor
    • The oil pressure switch
    • The engine block heater (if equipped)
    • The knock sensor
    • The heated oxygen sensor (HO2S2)
    • The crankshaft position sensor (24X)
    • The A/C compressor
    • The wiring harness grounds
  19. Disconnect the three-way catalytic converter pipe from the right exhaust manifold.
  20. Remove the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount and Bracket Replacement .
  21. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle -- 4T65-E.
  22. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  23. Remove the A/C compressor bolts. Reposition and secure the A/C compressor.
  24. Remove the torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement in Automatic Transaxle -- 4T65-E.
  25. Remove the transaxle brace. Refer to Transmission Brace Replacement in Automatic Transaxle -- 4T65-E.

  27. Remove the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1).
  28. Disconnect the radiator outlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  29. Lower the vehicle.
  30. Caution: In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle.

    In order to avoid cruise control cable damage, position the cable out of the way while you remove or install the engine. Do not pry or lean against the cruise control cable and do not kink the cable. You must replace a damaged cable.

  31. Disconnect the accelerator control and cruise control servo cable from the throttle body and the cable bracket. Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L and Cruise Control Cable Replacement in Cruise Control.
  32. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the upper intake manifold and the EVAP line.
  33. Disconnect the fuel feed and return hoses. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement - Filter to Engine in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  34. Disconnect the AIR system (if equipped). Refer to Secondary Air Injection Pump Replacement and Secondary Air Injection Check Valve and Check Valve Pipe Replacement - Bank 2 in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  35. Remove the power steering pump and reposition. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering.
  36. Disconnect the heater outlet and inlet hoses from the engine. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in HVAC.
  37. Disconnect the radiator inlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  38. Suitably support the transaxle with floor stands.
  39. Attach the engine lifting device.

  41. Remove the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2).
  42. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
  43. Remove the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Removal .
  44. Secure the engine to a suitable engine stand.
  45. Remove the generator and the generator bracket.
  46. Remove the drive belt tensioner.
  47. Remove the ignition control module.

Installation Procedure

Notice: Refer to Engine Emission Notice in the Preface section.

  1. Install the ignition control module.
  2. Install the drive belt tensioner.
  3. Install the generator bracket and the generator.
  4. Remove the engine from stand.
  5. Install the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Installation .
  6. Install the engine to the vehicle.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2).
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2) to 75 N·m (55 lb ft).

  10. Remove the engine lifting device.
  11. Remove the floor stands from the transaxle.
  12. Install the radiator inlet hose to the engine. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  13. Connect the heater outlet and inlet hoses to the engine. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in HVAC.
  14. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering System.
  15. Connect the AIR system if equipped. Refer to Secondary Air Injection Check Valve and Check Valve Pipe Replacement - Bank 2 and Secondary Air Injection Pump Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  16. Connect the fuel feed and return hoses. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement - Filter to Engine in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  17. Connect the power brake booster vacuum hose to the upper intake manifold. Refer to Vacuum Brake Booster Hose Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes.
  18. Connect the vacuum hoses to the upper intake manifold.
  19. Caution: In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle.

    In order to avoid cruise control cable damage, position the cable out of the way while you remove or install the engine. Do not pry or lean against the cruise control cable and do not kink the cable. You must replace a damaged cable.

  20. Connect the accelerator control and cruise control servo cable to the cable bracket and the throttle body. Refer to Cruise Control Cable Replacement in Cruise Control and Accelerator Control Cable Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  21. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  22. Install the radiator outlet hose to the engine. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  24. Install the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1).
  25. Tighten
    Tighten the upper transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1) to 75 N·m (55 lb ft).

  26. Install the transaxle brace. Refer to Transmission Brace Replacement in Automatic Transaxle -- 4T65-E.
  27. Install the torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement in Automatic Transaxle -- 4T65-E.
  28. Install the A/C compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in HVAC.
  29. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  30. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle -- 4T65-E.
  31. Install the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount and Bracket Replacement .
  32. Install the three-way catalytic converter pipe to the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  33. Install the oil filter. Refer to Oil Filter Adapter Installation .
  34. Connect the electrical harness connectors to the following:
  35. • The vehicle speed sensor
    • The oil level sensor
    • The oil pressure switch
    • The engine block heater (if equipped)
    • The knock sensor
    • The heated oxygen sensor (HO2S2)
    • The crankshaft position sensor (24X)
    • The A/C compressor
    • The wiring harness grounds
  36. Install the lower radiator air baffle. Refer to Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors in Engine Cooling.
  37. Install the right engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  38. Lower the vehicle.
  39. Fill the engine with new engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  40. Fill with cooling system with engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  41. Connect the electrical harness connectors to the following:
  42. • The heated oxygen sensor (HO2S1)
    • The AIR check valve solenoid (if equipped)
    • The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve
    • The Evaporative Emissions Canister Purge Solenoid valve
    • The Throttle Position (TP) sensor
    • The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
    • The generator
    • The ignition coil
    • The wiring harness grounds
    • The two body wiring harness-to-engine harness connectors
  43. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  44. Install the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  45. Install the throttle body air inlet duct and the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  46. Install the cross vehicle brace. Refer to Cross Vehicle Brace Replacement in Body Front End.
  47. Install the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement Body Front End.
  48. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  49. Perform a CKP system variation learn procedure. Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn in Engine Controls 3.4L.
