GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

The DIC consists of the following three modes of operation:

    • Compass/Temperature mode
    • Trip Computer mode
    • Off

The MODE button allows the user to cycle through these three modes of operation.

Compass/Temperature Mode

This mode displays an 8-point compass heading on the left hand side of the display and the ambient temperature on the right-hand side. If the ambient temperature is below 3°C (37°F), the temperature reading will toggle between displaying the outside temperature and the word ICE for two minutes. If the temperature is less -40°C (-40°F), OC will display; if above 60°C (140°F), SC will display. These are error codes for open circuit and shorted circuit. Refer to Electronic Compass Calibration in order to calibrate the compass or set the variance.

Trip Calculator Mode

In the trip calculator mode, pressing the MODE button cycles through the five displays. Pressing the MODE button after the last trip calculator display returns the DIC to the OFF mode.

Press the MODE button in order to toggle through the following information displays:

    • Compass/Temp
    • Average fuel economy
    • Instant fuel economy
    • Trip range
    • Fuel used
    • Average speed
    • OFF

The DIC performs the following error detection where possible:

    • No serial data stream for 10 seconds
    • An open circuited fuel level sender

If the DIC is unable to calculate a value due to a missing speed signal, an error signal (E) displays when any of the following functions is selected:

    • AVG ECON
    • INST ECON
    • AVG SPEED

In the absence of vehicle communications, a double dash (--) displays in the digits section. The display format for each mode is indicated in the following table:

Resetting the Trip Computer

You may only reset the AVG ECON, FUEL USED, and AVG SPEED displays. (You cannot reset Comp/Temp, Instant Econ, Range and OFF Modes.) Press and hold the RESET button for at least 2 seconds, while in a resettable trip function. The reset will acknowledge by the display momentarily flashing all segments ON for a period of a half second. Reset each display individually.

Average Economy

Average fuel economy (AFE) is calculated as the ratio between the following values:

    • The accumulated distance since the last AFE reset
    • The accumulated fuel consumption since the last AFE reset

After a trip reset, the AFE resets both the accumulated distance and the accumulated fuel consumption. The driver information display retains the AFE value during ignition OFF.

Instant Fuel Economy

Instantaneous fuel economy is the ratio between the following values:

    • The accumulated distance traveled over the past 1 second
    • The accumulated fuel consumption over the past 1 second

You cannot reset the instant fuel economy mode. The value of this mode is not retained during ignition OFF.

Trip Range

Trip range is calculated as the product of the average fuel economy (AFE) and the amount of fuel remaining in the tank. When a range of less than 40 miles is calculated, the low-fuel-range mode is entered. During the low-fuel-range mode, the numeric display will spell LO. Performing a reset will have no effect while in trip-range mode. If the AFE is reset, the trip range will not be affected until after a few hours of new AFE data is obtained.

Fuel Used

The DIC calculates and displays the total amount of fuel used since the last reset operation. This information is accumulated from liters of fuel per real time, converted to gallons as required. Pressing the RESET button while in the fuel-used display mode resets the fuel-used accumulator to zero.

The value of this mode is retained during ignition OFF.

Average Speed

Average speed is the ratio of the accumulated distance per accumulated ignition on-time. Both values are calculated since the last average speed reset. On-time is the accumulation of all on-time cycles since the last reset. An on-time cycle is measured from the time that the ignition is turned ON, to the time when the ignition is turned OFF. Pressing the RESET button resets the average speed and returns the setting to zero.

The value of average speed is retained during an ignition OFF.

Driver Information Center (DIC) HomeLink®

Object Number: 300527 Size: SH

This system gives the vehicle owner the ability to use a garage door opener (GDO) that is integral to the interior trim of the vehicle. The HomeLink® is capable of learning and remembering variables required to emulate 3 different GDO transmitters. Refer to Garage Door Opener Programming - Universal and Garage Door Opener Operation in Garage Door Opener.
