04 Chevrolet Impala SS Spoiler Cracking Above the CHMSL - kw VME body crack deck lid paint panel rear service trunk

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in the PI.

2004 Chevrolet Impala SS model only with a condition of the SS model spoiler is cracking above the CHMSL. The 2004 Impala SS model spoiler may become cracked after repeated deck lid closings.

Spoilers returned for analysis have shown that the material in the area of the crack is too thin. Starting with January production the spoiler supplier has corrected the production process that was causing the material to be too thin in the areas that were exhibiting the cracking condition and the spoiler material was changed to a stronger material to prevent this condition from occurring in the future.

GM Service Parts were purged of any inventory that was produced before January 2005 and restocked with the improved part. The initial shipment of parts to GMSPO were prepainted in black so for a brief period of time all service spoilers can be installed on a black vehicle without requiring any painting. But for the remaining 3 available colors for the 2005 SS model the black spoiler will need to be repainted to match the vehicle.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
