Removal Procedure

Caution: An electric fan under the hood can start up even when the engine is not running and can injure you. Keep hands, clothing and tools away from any underhood electric fan.

Caution: To help avoid personal injury or damage to the vehicle, a bent, cracked, or damaged fan blade or housing should always be replaced.

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the right and the left engine mount struts. Refer to the following procedures:
  3. •  Engine Mount Strut Replacement - Right Side
    •  Engine Mount Strut Replacement - Left Side in Engine Mechanical-3.4L
    •  Engine Mount Strut Replacement - Right Side
    •  Engine Mount Strut Replacement - Left Side in Engine Mechanical-3.8L
  4. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls-3.8L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls-3.4L.
  5. Remove the transmission oil cooler lines from the retainer clip at the bottom of the cooling fan shroud.

  6. Object Number: 1202851 Size: SH
  7. Remove the cooling fan shroud bolts.

  8. Object Number: 1202860 Size: SH
  9. Remove the bolt that connects the fan shroud to the condenser hold down bracket.

  10. Object Number: 1202856 Size: SH
  11. Remove the radiator upper support brackets and bolts that connect to the fan shroud.
  12. Disconnect the engine cooling fan motors electrical connector.
  13. Remove the cooling fans electrical harness from the fan shroud clips.
  14. Remove the cooling fan shroud.
  15. Remove the engine cooling fan heat shield.

  16. Object Number: 381377 Size: SH
  17. Remove the engine cooling fan blade nut.
  18. Remove engine cooling fan blade.
  19. Caution: If a fan blade is bent or damaged in any way, do not repair or reuse the damaged part. Always replace a bent or damaged fan blade. Fan blades that have been damaged can not be assured of proper balance and could fail and fly apart during subsequent use. This creates an extremely dangerous situation.

The fan blades must remain in proper balance. You cannot assure fan blade balance once a fan blade has been bent or damaged. A fan blade that is not in proper balance could fail and fly apart during use, creating an extremely dangerous situation.

  20. Inspect the cooling fan blades for the following conditions:
  21. • Bent or cracked cooling fan blades
    • Smoothness of the cooling fan blade mating surfaces
    • Remove burrs or other imperfections as necessary

    Object Number: 381381 Size: SH
  22. Remove the engine cooling fan motor bolts.
  23. Remove the engine cooling fan motor from the fan shroud.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 381381 Size: SH
  1. Install the engine cooling fan motor to the fan shroud.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the engine cooling fan motor bolts.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 6 N·m (53 lb in).

    Object Number: 381377 Size: SH
  5. Install the engine cooling fan blade.
  6. Install the engine cooling fan blade nut.
