Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the engine crank?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. With a scan tool, observe the Security Lamp State parameter in the BCM Security Data list.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the scan tool display On?

Go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle

  1. With a scan tool, observe the Starter Relay Command parameter in the PCM data list.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the scan tool display Yes?

Go to Step 5

  1. With a scan tool, observe the Crank Request parameter in the PCM data list.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the scan tool display Yes?

Go to Step 21

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Verify that the transmission is in Park or Neutral.
  3. With a scan tool, observe the IMS parameter in the Transmission data list.

Does the scan tool display Park or Neutral?

Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Do you hear the CRANK relay click?

Go to Step 10

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the CRANK relay.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the CRANK relay coil and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 9

  1. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the CRANK relay coil and the control circuit of the CRANK relay.
  2. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 18

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the CRANK relay.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the CRANK relay switch circuit and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a 40-amp fused jumper between the battery positive voltage circuit of the CRANK relay switch circuit and the supply voltage circuit of the CRANK solenoid.

Does the engine crank?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM).
  3. Connect a test lamp between the crank voltage circuit of the PCM and a good ground.
  4. Turn the ignition to the Start position

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Test the supply voltage circuit of the starter solenoid for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Test the supply voltage circuit of the starter solenoid for a high resistance or open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Test the control circuit of the CRANK relay for an open or a short to battery voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Replace the PCM. Refer to Control Module References for replacement, setup, and programming.
