Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement 3.4L
Tools Required
J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector
Removal Procedure
- Recover the refrigerant. Refer to
Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging
.
- Release the drive belt tension by lifting or rotating the drive belt tensioner with a breaker bar.
- Remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor pulley and position the drive belt aside.
- Slowly release the tension from the drive belt tensioner and remove the breaker bar.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the splash shield from the right side of the engine. Refer to
Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side
in Body Front End.
- Remove the lower air deflector. Refer to
Radiator Air Lower Baffle and Deflector Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the A/C compressor hose nut.
- Disconnect the A/C compressor hose from A/C compressor.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the A/C compressor.
- Remove and discard the sealing washers.
- Remove the upper mounting bolts from the A/C compressor.
- Remove the lower mounting bolt from the A/C compressor.
- Remove the A/C compressor from the vehicle.
Important: Replacement compressors are shipped with PAG oil
- If replacing the compressor, balance the compressor oil. Refer to
Air Conditioning Compressor Oil Balancing
.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the compressor drain plug (1).
Tighten
Tighten the drain plug to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).
- Install the A/C compressor.
- Install the A/C compressor upper mounting bolts.
- Install the A/C compressor lower mounting bolt.
- Tighten the A/C compressor upper mounting bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- Tighten the A/C compressor lower mounting bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- Install the new sealing washers. Refer to
Sealing Washer Replacement
.
- Install the A/C compressor hose assembly to the A/C compressor.
- Install the A/C compressor hose nut to the A/C compressor.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).
- Connect the electrical connector to the A/C compressor.
- Install the lower air deflector. Refer to
Radiator Air Lower Baffle and Deflector Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Install the splash shield to the right side of the engine. Refer to
Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side
in Body Front End.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Release the drive belt tension by lifting or rotating the drive belt tensioner with a breaker bar.
- Install the drive belt around the A/C compressor pulley.
Important: Make sure the drive belt is aligned into the proper grooves of all pulleys.
- Slowly release the tension from the drive belt tensioner and remove the breaker bar.
- Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to
Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging
.
- Using
J 39400-A
, leak test the fittings of the component.

Removal Procedure
- Recover the refrigerant. Refer to

Important: The Supercharged L32 engine utilizes two drive belts. The outer drive belt drives the supercharger. Only release the drive belt tension from the accessories drive belt tensioner.
- Release the drive belt tension by lifting or rotating the drive belt tensioner with a 15mm box end wrench on the pully nut.
- Remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor pulley and position the drive belt aside.
- Slowly release the tension from the drive belt tensioner and remove the wrench.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the splash shield from the right side of the engine. Refer to
Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side
in Body Front End.
- Remove the lower air deflector. Refer to
Radiator Air Lower Baffle and Deflector Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the A/C compressor hose bolt.
- Disconnect the A/C compressor hose from A/C compressor.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the A/C compressor.
- Remove and discard the sealing washers.
- Loosen the rear mounting bolt from the A/C compressor.
- Remove the front mounting bolts from the A/C compressor.
- Remove the front mounting nut from the A/C compressor.
- Remove the A/C compressor.
Important: Replacement compressors are shipped with PAG oil
- If replacing the compressor, balance the compressor oil. Refer to

- Install the A/C compressor front bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- Install the A/C compressor front nut.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- Tighten the A/C compressor rear bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- Install the new sealing washers. Refer to
Sealing Washer Replacement
.
- Install the A/C compressor hose assembly to the A/C compressor.
- Install the A/C compressor hose nut to the compressor.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).
- Connect the electrical connector to the A/C compressor.
- Install the lower air deflector. Refer to
Radiator Air Lower Baffle and Deflector Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Install the splash shield to the right side of the engine. Refer to
Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side
in Body Front End.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Release the drive belt tension by lifting or rotating the drive belt tensioner with a 15mm box end wrench on the pully nut.
- Install the drive belt around the A/C compressor pulley.
Important: Verify that the drive belt is aligned into the proper grooves of all pulleys.
- Slowly release the tension from the drive belt tensioner and remove the wrench.
- Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to

.
- Using
J 39400-A
, leak test the fittings of the component.
