Sunroof Description and Operation 1 Connector System

Sunroof

This diagnostic procedure is to be used for the one connector Sunroof System that combines the sunroof control module with the sunroof motor/actuator.

The Sunroof System consists of the following components:

    • BATT MAIN 2 Fuse 50 A
    • Body control module (BCM)
    • Driver information center (DIC)
    • RAP relay
    • SUNROOF Fuse 20 A
    • Sunroof module (includes sunroof motor/actuator)
    • Sunroof switch

The Sunroof System is controlled by the sunroof switch and the sunroof motor/actuator assembly.

When the ignition is turned to RUN or ACCESSORY, or when the retained accessory power (RAP) system is active, the body control module (BCM) applies a ground to the RAP relay in the instrument panel (I/P) fuse block. This activates the RAP relay and allows battery positive voltage to be applied through the SUNROOF Fuse to the sunroof module. Ground for the sunroof module is supplied from G302.

The sunroof can be placed in 3 preset positions:

    • Open
    • Vent
    • Closed

When the sunroof switch is placed in the OPEN position, a ground is applied from the sunroof switch low reference circuit , through the sunroof switch and to the sunroof switch open signal circuit. The sunroof motor/actuator then applies voltage to the sunroof motor open control circuit and applies a ground to the sunroof motor close circuit. The sunroof motor then opens the sunroof to the full open position.

When the sunroof switch is placed in the VENT position, a ground is applied from the sunroof switch low reference circuit , through the sunroof switch and to the sunroof switch open signal circuit. The sunroof module then applies voltage to the sunroof motor open control circuit and applies a ground to the sunroof motor close circuit. The sunroof motor then opens the sunroof to the VENT position.

When the sunroof switch is placed and held in the CLOSED position, a ground is applied from the sunroof switch low reference circuit , through the sunroof switch and to the sunroof switch close signal circuit. The sunroof module then applies voltage to the sunroof motor close control circuit and applies a ground to the sunroof motor open circuit. The sunroof motor then closes the sunroof.

The sunroof can be placed in any preferred open position when:

    • The sunroof is in the fully opened position by pressing and holding the sunroof switch in the CLOSE position until the panel has reached the desired position then release the CLOSE switch in order to stop the sunroof
    • The sunroof is opening, it can be stopped by momentarily pressing either side of the switch.

The sunroof control module, sun roof actuator, and the sunroof motor are integral parts of the sunroof module assembly and are not serviced separately.

Sunroof Description and Operation 2 Connector System

Power Sunroof System Components

This diagnostic procedure is to be used for the 2 connector Sunroof System that uses a sunroof control module that is separate from the sunroof motor/actuator.

The Power Sunroof System consists of the following components:

    • Sunroof Control Module, Express Module
    • Sunroof Motor/Actuator
    • Sunroof Opening Position Switch
    • Sunroof switch
    • Sunroof glass, spoiler type, with glass sliding above roof
    • Sunshade
    • Rail and track assembly upon which the sunroof glass rides
    • Power supply for the sunroof control module: RETAINED ACCSRY PWR BRKR 30 A circuit breaker
    • Ground from G302

Power Sunroof Operation

The power sunroof will operate with the ignition switch turned to Accessory or RUN. Once the ignition switch is turned to OFF, the sunroof will continue to operate until any door is opened or when the retained accessory power (RAP) has timed out. For a description and operation of the RAP operation, refer to Retained Accessory Power (RAP) Description and Operation in Computer/Integrating Systems.

Use the rocker type sunroof switch, located in the front center of the headliner, to command the sunroof to:

    • Vent
    • Express Open
    • Close

Pressing the sunroof switch rearward, the sunroof glass will slide from:

    • Closed position to the vent position
    • Vent position to the open position

Pressing the sunroof switch forward, the sunroof glass will slide from:

    • Open position to the vent position
    • Vent position to the closed position

To Express Open to Vent

To open the power sunroof to the vent position from the closed position, turn the ignition to ON, with the engine OFF. Momentarily press the sunroof switch rearward. This will apply the sunroof switch low reference to the sunroof open signal circuit 5-volt reference input to drop to 0 volts. As long as the sunroof control module only sees a single input request from the sunroof switch open signal circuit, the control module will automatically express open the sunroof glass to the full vent position, raising the rear of the glass upward. The sunroof glass will soft stop at the full vent position, based on the inputs from the limit switches. The sunshade will have to be manually slid closed. To stop the sunroof glass in a desired vent position other than full open, either:

    • Momentarily press the sunroof switch again to stop express to vent.
    • Instead of momentarily pressing the sunroof switch to express to vent, maintain pressing the sunroof switch rearward until the glass reaches a desired vent position, then release the switch.

Express Open

The express open will work only with the glass in between the full vent and partial open positions. To express open the power sunroof, turn the ignition ON, with engine OFF. Momentarily press less than 1.5 seconds, the sunroof switch rearward once. This will apply the sunroof switch low reference to the sunroof switch signal open signal circuit 5-volt reference input to drop to 0 volts momentarily. The momentary 0 volts input to the sunroof control module indicates an express open request. The sunroof glass will slide automatically (express open) above the roof. The sunroof glass will soft stop at the full open position, based on the inputs from the limit switches. As the sunroof glass express opens, so will the sunshade. To stop the sunroof glass in a desired position other than to the express open position:

    • As the sunroof is express opening, press the sunroof switch again, in either direction, to stop the movement.
    • Instead of momentarily pressing the sunroof switch, maintain pressing more than 1.5 seconds the sunroof switch rearward, and when the sunroof glass reaches the desired position, then release the switch.

To Close

To close the power sunroof, turn the ignition ON, wth the engine OFF, and from any position, press and hold the sunroof switch forward. This will apply the sunroof switch low reference to the sunroof close signal circuit 5-volt reference input to drop to 0 volts. The sunroof switch close signal input to the sunroof control module needs to have a constant 0 volts applied to allow the motor to continue to drive the sunroof glass past the vent position, until it reaches the closed position. The sunroof glass will soft stop at the closed position, based on the inputs from the limit switches. The wind deflector will retract prior to the glass reaching the fully closed position. To close the sunshade, manually slide closed.

Sunroof Motor

The sunroof has a bi-directional motor. When the motor is not operating both circuits are grounded. When the motor drives the sunroof glass in the direction from the closed to vent or vent to open position, the following occurs:

    • Voltage is supplied to the sunroof motor/actuator open control circuit.
    • Ground is maintained to the sunroof motor/actuator close control circuit.

When the motor drives the sunroof in the direction from the open to vent or vent to closed position, the following occurs:

    • Voltage is supplied to the sunroof motor/actuator close control circuit.
    • Ground is maintained to the sunroof motor open control circuit.

The sunroof control module is equipped with a timer circuit which stops the operation of the sunroof motor after 8 seconds.

Sunroof Opening Position Switch

The Sunroof Opening Position Switch tracks the position of the glass through 2 limit switches:

    • Soft Stop limit
    • Vent limit

The sunroof control module monitors the limit switches and based on the inputs, determines the position of the sunroof glass. As a limit switch closes, the 5-volt reference will be shorted to the sunroof limit switch low reference circuit, pulling the 5-volt reference to 0 volts.

The sunroof control module understands the position of the sunroof glass, based on the different input combinations through the soft stop and vent limit switch inputs.
