Battery Positive and Negative Cable Replacement RPO LS4

Removal Procedure

Important: When replacing battery cables be sure to use replacement cables that are the same type, gage, and length.


    Object Number: 1616995  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable (3). Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Open the positive battery cable terminal lead cover (1).
  3. Loosen the positive battery cable terminal lead nut
  4. Remove the positive battery cable terminal from the battery.
  5. Disconnect the instrument panel (I/P) harness electrical connector (2) from the battery current sensor.

  7. Disconnect the battery cable connector from the I/P harness electrical connector.

  9. Remove the bussed electrical center (BEC) cover.
  10. Remove the positive battery cable junction block lead nut (1).
  11. Remove the positive battery cable terminal (2) from the BEC.

  12. Object Number: 1617687  Size: SH
  13. Remove the ground wire bolt (1) and reposition the wire (5) from the top rail.
  14. Remove the battery cable harness retaining clips (2, 3, and 4) from the front rail and fan shroud.
  15. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .

  17. Remove the battery cable harness retainers from the engine cradle.

  19. Remove the transaxle stud nut (8).
  20. Remove the battery cable ground (7) from the transaxle stud.
  21. Reposition the positive battery cable boot (4) at the starter solenoid.
  22. Remove the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut (3) from the starter.
  23. Remove the positive battery cable (2) from the starter motor.
  24. Remove the positive battery cable clip (5) from the transmission stud.
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26. Remove the positive and negative battery cable from the vehicle.

  28. If replacing the positive and negative battery cable, perform the following:
  29. 22.1. Cut the tie straps and electrical tape attaching the battery current sensor to the battery cable.
    22.2. Squeeze the battery cable branches together.

            Important: Note the position of the battery current sensor prior to removal.

    22.3. Slide the battery current sensor (1) off of the battery cable.

Installation Procedure

  1. If the positive and negative battery cable was replaced, perform the following:
  2. 1.1. Slide the battery current sensor (1) onto the battery cable.

            Important: Ensure that the tape tab is pointing away from the negative cable terminal.

    1.2. Using NEW tie straps and electrical tape, attach the battery current sensor to the battery cable.

  3. Install the positive and negative battery cable to the vehicle.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle.
  5. Install the positive battery cable (2) to the starter motor.
  6. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  7. Install the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut (3) to the starter.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  9. Position the positive battery cable boot (4) at the starter solenoid.
  10. Install the positive battery cable clip (5) to the transmission stud.
  11. Install the battery cable ground (7) to the transaxle stud.
  12. Install the transaxle stud nut (8).
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  14. Install the battery cable harness retainers from the engine cradle.
  15. Lower the vehicle.

  17. Position the ground wire (5) and install the ground wire bolt (1) to the top rail.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  19. Install the battery cable harness retaining clips (2, 3, and 4) to the front rail and fan shroud.

  21. Install the positive battery cable terminal (2) to the BEC.
  22. Install the positive battery cable junction block lead nut (1).
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  24. Install the BEC cover.

  26. Connect the battery cable connector to the I/P harness electrical connector.

  27. Object Number: 1616995  Size: SH
  28. Connect the I/P harness electrical connector (2) to the battery current sensor.
  29. Install the positive battery cable terminal to the battery.
  30. Tighten the positive battery cable terminal lead nut.
  31. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  32. Snap closed the positive battery cable terminal lead cover (1).
  33. Connect the negative battery cable (3). Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

Removal Procedure

Important: When replacing battery cables be sure to use replacement cables that are the same type, gage, and length.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Open the positive battery cable terminal cover (7).
  3. Loosen the positive battery cable terminal nut.
  4. Remove the positive battery cable terminal (1) from the battery.
  5. Remove the ground wire bolt (2) and wire (3) from the upper tie bar.
  6. Disconnect the instrument panel (I/P) harness electrical connector (1) from the battery current sensor.

  8. Disconnect the battery cable connector from the I/P harness connector.

  9. Object Number: 1552769  Size: SH
  10. Remove the bussed electrical center (BEC) cover.
  11. Remove the positive battery cable junction block lead nut (1).
  12. Remove the positive battery cable (2) from the BEC.
  13. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  14. Remove the front lower air deflector. Refer to Radiator Air Lower Baffle and Deflector Replacement .

  15. Object Number: 911140  Size: SH
  16. Remove the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut (3) from the starter.
  17. Remove the positive battery cable (2) from the starter motor.
  18. Lower the vehicle.

  19. Object Number: 1617421  Size: SH
  20. Remove the transaxle stud nut (2).
  21. Remove the battery cable ground (1) from the transaxle stud.

  22. Object Number: 1616991  Size: SH
  23. Remove the positive and negative battery cable retainers (5) from the right hand rail.
  24. Remove the positive and negative battery cable retainers (6) from the cradle.
  25. Remove the positive and negative battery cable assembly from the vehicle.

  26. Object Number: 1617003  Size: SH
  27. If replacing the cable assembly, perform the following:
  28. 21.1. Cut the tie straps and electrical tape attaching the battery current sensor to the battery cable.
    21.2. Squeeze the cable branches together.

            Important: Note the position of the battery current sensor prior to removal.

    21.3. Slide the battery current sensor (1) off of the battery cable.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1617003  Size: SH
  1. If the cable assembly was replaced, perform the following:
  2. 1.1. Slide the battery current sensor (1) onto the battery cable.

            Important: Ensure that the tape tab is pointing towards the positive cable terminal.

    1.2. Using NEW tie straps and electrical tape, attach the battery current sensor to the battery cable.

  3. Install the positive and negative battery cable assembly to the vehicle.
  4. Install the positive and negative battery cable retainers (6) to the cradle.
  5. Install the positive and negative battery cable retainers (5) to the right hand rail.

  6. Object Number: 1617421  Size: SH
  7. Install the battery cable ground (1) to the transaxle stud.
  8. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  9. Install the transaxle stud nut (2).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  11. Raise and support the vehicle.

  12. Object Number: 911140  Size: SH
  13. Install the positive battery cable (2) to the starter motor.
  14. Install the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut (3) to the starter.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  16. Install the front lower air deflector. Refer to Radiator Air Lower Baffle and Deflector Replacement .
  17. Lower the vehicle.

  18. Object Number: 1552769  Size: SH
  19. Install the positive battery cable (2) to the BEC.
  20. Install the positive battery cable junction block lead nut (1).
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  22. Install the BEC cover.

  23. Object Number: 1617420  Size: SH
  24. Connect the battery cable connector to the I/P harness connector.

  25. Object Number: 1616991  Size: SH
  26. Connect the I/P harness electrical connector (1) to the battery current sensor.
  27. Install the ground wire (3) and bolt (2) to the upper tie bar.
  28. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  29. Install the positive battery cable terminal (1) to the battery.
  30. Tighten the positive battery cable terminal nut.
  31. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  32. Snap closed the positive battery cable terminal cover (7).
  33. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
