Subject: EI08035 -- Engine Cradle Noise, Pop/Creak

Models:2007 Chevrolet Impala

Attention:  Proceed with this bulletin ONLY if the customer has commented about this concern AND the EI number is listed in GMVIS. If the customer has not commented about this condition or the EI does not show in GMVIS, disregard the bulletin and proceed with diagnostics found in published service information. THIS IS NOT A RECALL -- refer to Service Bulletin 04-00-89-053B for more details on the use of Engineering Information bulletins.

Condition

Some customers may comment on a pop/creak type noise from the engine cradle.

Cause

GM Engineering is attempting to determine the root cause of concerns for pop/creak noises coming from the front suspension. GM has a need to obtain technical information first hand from the dealer technician during diagnosis and PRIOR to repair. As a result, this information will be used by engineering to help root-cause the customer's concern and develop/validate a field fix.

Correction
Object Number: 2053970 Size: SH

Important: This measurement MUST be made at the nut using a "crow's foot." You will need a backup wrench on the bolt head.

GM Engineering needs to know the CURRENT torque of the two bolts (left and right) that join the steering gear to the engine cradle (refer to the figure above).

Important:  The measurement is to be taken using a calibrated torque wrench.

  1. Turn the nut five to ten degrees in the tightening direction. Note the current torque while the nut is still moving/tightening. The reading is to be taken while the nut is still moving/tightening.
  2. Record this measurement on the repair order.
  3. Contact GM Engineering Anil Sharma at 905-644-1521 or Jaswinder Bawa at 905-644-1461.
  4. After taking the static torque measurement, continue repairing the vehicle concern per SI.

Important: If the bolts are loose, tighten them to specification. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications in SI.
