The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Speakers rattle or are distorted.

Recommendation/Instructions:

The possibilities include:

  1. Side air bag hang tab creates a squeak when touches the upper edge of the rectangular hole in the quarter. If air bag three screws (two in the bracket by the square hole and one by the assist handle) are loosened up, the entire assembly would drop lower and then it can be reassembled.
  2. Onstar antenna purple wire connector rattles against the roof as well as the antenna module rattling. Put flocking tape around the antenna module mounting bracket (3M- Squeak Reduction Tape, P/N 06356, or equivalent). Also it will be necessary to route the s band yellow wire between the roof and the antenna module toward the rear of the vehicle in such a way that the wiring or connector cannot rattle against the roof.
  3. If rattle is coming from the speakers apply pressure along the long clip on the speaker for rattling against the parcel shelf attach hole. If rattle eliminated by applying pressure check clearance between the clip and the hole. If there is clearance between the clip and the hole on one side of the hole and not on the other, remove the speaker and correct the sheet metal height mismatch.
  4. Debris in the cone area of the speakers. Clean debris from speaker based on findings.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
