Condition

Important:  If the customer did not bring their vehicle in for this condition, do not proceed with this bulletin.

Some customers may comment on a rattle noise coming from the rear speakers.

Correction

GM Engineering is attempting to determine the root cause of the rear speaker rattle. GM has a need to obtain information about the vehicle during diagnosis and BEFORE repair. This information will be used to "root cause" the condition and develop/validate a field fix.

If the customer's concern can be duplicated, document the following information on the repair order:

  1. In what area is the rattle noise coming from? Be as specific as possible.
  2. When the rattle is detected, document the following radio settings:
  3. • volume
    • bass
    • midrange
    • treble
  4. Based on the location of the noise, inspect the following areas and make repairs as necessary:
  5.    Caution: In order to prevent SIR deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs, do not strike the door or the door pillar in the area of the side impact sensor (SIS). Turn OFF the ignition and remove the key when performing service in the area of the SIS.

    • Side Air Bag Hang Tab:
    • The side air bag hang tab can create a squeak if it touches the upper edge of the rectangular hole in the quarter inner panel. If the air bag screws are loose, tighten the screws.

    Tighten
Tighten the screws to 9N·m (80 lb in).

    • OnStar® Antenna Connector (purple wire) rattles against roof:
    • The antenna module may also cause a rattle. Install flocking tape around the antenna module mounting bracket (3M® Squeak Reduction Tape P/N 06356, or equivalent) so the tape is between the bracket and the roof. Route the S-band yellow wire between the roof and the antenna module -- toward the rear of the vehicle so the wiring or connector cannot rattle against the roof.
    • Speakers:
    • Inspect the long clip on the speaker for contact against the rear seat back extension hole.
    • Debris in the cone of the speakers:
    • Carefully remove any debris from the speaker.
  6. Contact the engineer listed below. Provide the engineer with all information based on Steps 1-3 of this bulletin. If necessary, the engineer will provide further diagnostic and repair information.

Important:  If necessary, leave a message containing the following information

   • Technician Name
   • Dealer Name
   • Phone Number
   • VIN
   • Repair Order Number
If the engineer does not respond within one (1) hour, proceed with diagnosis and repair.
