2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

This PI was superseded to update model years. Please discard PIC3993A.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

This is a copy of the instructions for adding GM (General Motors) Accessories Remote Vehicle Start (RVS) to AP8 equipped vehicle.

Note: The instructions are included in the GM Accessories RVS kit.

Recommendation/Instructions:

REMOTE VEHICLE START

The vehicle must have the extended range keyless entry option (AP8) for this kit to add remote vehicle start. Otherwise, the vehicle doesn't have the necessary hardware. (The hood ajar switch and associated wiring is not installed, and the remote control door lock receiver doesn't have the necessary antenna.) The vehicle must also be built with an automatic transmission. Adding remote vehicle start requires programming of the vehicle. This is done with a Service Programming System. The installer needs to call the Techline Customer Support Center (TCSC). The TCSC will provide a Vehicle Configuration Index (VCI). The VCI is good for only one specific Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

KIT CONTENTS

2 Transmitters

Vehicle Label

TOOLS REQUIRED

Scan Tool

Service Programming System (SPS - TIS 2000 or equivalent)

ALSO REQUIRED

Surface Cleaner (50% isopropyl alcohol, FS-1082 hi-flash naphtha or equivalent)

PROCEDURE

Important: Please review this entire procedure before attempting to perform the upgrade.

  1. Verify the vehicle has the AP8 option and an automatic transmission. This can be done by using the GM Vehicle Inquiry System (GMVIS) or the vehicle's Service Parts ID Label. Call TCSC (1-888-337-1010) to obtain a Vehicle Configuration Index (VCI) number. You must have the vehicle's VIN that will be upgraded and the following Authorization Code:
  2. This will allow you to reprogram the body control module (BCM) for remote vehicle start.

  3. Using a Scan Tool and SPS terminal, reprogram the Theft Deterrent Module (TDM). Select the calibration with remote start.
  4. Important: You must program the Theft Deterrent Module (TDM), NOT the Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn.

  5. Reprogram the BCM using the VCI number for this VIN.
  6. Notice: Before programming, the following conditions must be met, or control module damage may occur:

The Scan Tool and the SPS terminal must have the latest software.

VEHICLE SYSTEM VOLTAGE

   •

Ensure there is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming.

   •

Vehicle system voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be charged before programming if the vehicle system voltage is low.

   •

A battery charger is NOT connected to the vehicle's battery. Voltage fluctuations from a battery charger may cause programming failure.

   •

Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load the vehicle's battery, such as the following components:

      • Twilight sentinel
      • Interior lights
      • Daytime running lights (DRL)--Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system. Refer to the Owner's manual.
      • Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
      • Engine cooling fans, radio, etc.
   •

The ignition switch must be in the proper position. The Scan Tool prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during programming, unless instructed to do so.

   •

Make certain all tool connections are secure.

   •

DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs, programming failure or control module damage may occur.

   •

DO NOT turn OFF the ignition if programming is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure that all connections are secure and the SPS software is up to date. Attempt to reprogram the control module. If the control module cannot be programmed, replace the control module.

Important: After programming, perform the following to avoid future misdiagnosis:

   •

Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.

   •

Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.

   •

Setup the BCM using the scan tool.

  1. Navigate to the following on the scan tool:
  2. • Computer/Integrating Systems
    • Module Setup
    • Body Control Module
  3. Recalibrate the brake pedal position (BPP) sensor by selecting "BPP Sensor Calibration" and
  4. Relearn the restraints ID by selecting "Setup SDM Primary Key in BCM"
  5. • Using a scan tool, retrieve any history Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from all of the modules.
    • Clear all history DTCs.
    • Drive the vehicle above 25 mph for at least 2 minutes. This is to update the tire pressure display on the driver information center, if equipped.
  6. Program the new transmitters to the remote control door lock receiver using the scan tool.
  7. Important: Up to 4 transmitters can be programmed. If the nonremote start transmitters are to be recognized, they must also be programmed. Do not operate or program the transmitters in the vicinity of other vehicles that are in the keyless entry program mode. This prevents the programming of the transmitters to the incorrect vehicle.

    • Navigate to the following on the scan tool:
    • Keyless Entry
    • Module Setup
    • Remote Control Door Lock Receiver
    • Program Key Fobs
    • Follow the on screen instructions.

Important: Program the new transmitters into key fob slots 1 and 2. This will enable diagnostics on the transmitters. Any other transmitters should be programmed into slots 3 and 4.

    • Remove the scan tool.
    • Operate the transmitter functions in order to verify correct system operation.
  8. Apply label to a smooth surface of the vehicle near the existing Service Parts ID Label. This label is for future service parts identification.
  9. • Do not place label over top of any existing labels.
    • The surface temperature should not be less than 65°F (21°C).
       - Clean the vehicle surface with a suitable solvent (50% isopropyl alcohol, FS-1062 hi-flash naphtha or equivalent).
       - Dry the surface with a clean cloth.
       - Peel the liner from the backside of the label, being careful not to touch the adhesive or allow dirt or any foreign material to come in contact with it.
       - Carefully align the label to the surface, press firmly, and smooth out.
  10. Add transmitters to the customer's key rings.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
