Incorrect Engine Cover - keywords cover engine incorrect installed LZ4 LZ9 LZE LZG wrong

Subject:Incorrect Engine Cover

Models:2008 Chevrolet Impala
2008 Pontiac G6
Equipped with 3.5L (LZ4/LZE) or 3.9L (LZ9/LZG) engines

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some owners may comment that they believe their vehicle may have been built with the incorrect engine assembly. They say this because the engine cover on the engine says 3.5L instead of the 3.9L which is what they ordered and paid for.

Because both engines are basically identical externally and the mounting brackets for the cover are the same on both, it is possible that the incorrect engine cover got installed at the final assembly plant.

Recommendation/Instructions:

To verify that the correct engine was installed, check the 8th position or character of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). If the 8th character is a "1" or "3", then the vehicle was built with a 3.9L engine. If the 8th character is an "N" or "K", then the vehicle has a 3.5L engine.

If the VIN indicates that the correct engine has been installed, then replace the engine cover with the correct cover. See the GMSPO parts catalog for the correct part number engine cover.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
