This PI was superceded to update recommendation. Please discard PIC4730A.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Customer may comment on a skunk like or chemical smell from the interior of the vehicle.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Inspect the IP insulator material at the area near the brake booster boot. You may also want to bag test the boot i.e. put the brake booster boot in a bag over night and see if the odor follows the part. In either case, replace the IP insulator. If the brake booster boot contains the odor, replace it also.

If the odor does not seem to be coming from the IP area, then inspect the rear package shelf area and replace as necessary.

UPDATE (6/08): Engineering continues to work to identify the root cause of the concern. At this time there is no permanent repair. It is not known if the IP insulator, the brake booster boot, and/or the rear package shelf are the source of the odor or if the components are just absorbing the odor.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
