Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1230398 Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the right headlamp. Refer to Headlamp Replacement .
  3. If equipped, remove the generator driver belt, A/C compressor driver belt and power steering driver belt.
  4. Remove the timing belt bolts (1) and front upper cover (2).

  5. Remove the right wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  6. Align the mark on the crankshaft gear and camshaft gear.
  7. Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the mark on the camshaft gear is aligned with the notch at the bottom of the rear timing belt cover (1).

    Important: To remove the bolt, use a driver such as the picture shown (3).

  8. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt (2).
  9. Remove the crankshaft pulley (1).

  10. Remove the oil level gage tube bolt (3).
  11. Remove the oil level gage guide tube (4).
  12. Remove the timing belt bolts (2).
  13. Remove the timing belt front lower cover (1).

  14. Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt (1).
  15. Remove the timing belt (2).

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

    Important: If the camshaft or crankshaft rotates in the process of installing the timing belt, perform the valve timing setting necessarily. Refer to Valve Timing Inspection and Adjustment .

  1. Install the timing belt.

    2. Important: Turn the crankshaft twice to align the notch on the camshaft with the pointer on the rear cover and tighten the tensioner bolt.

  2. Install the timing belt tensioner bolt.

    3. Tighten
    Tighten the timing belt tensioner bolt to 15-23 N·m (11-17 lb ft).

  3. Install the timing belt front lower cover and bolts (2).

    4. Tighten
    Tighten the timing belt front lower cover bolts to 9-12 N·m (80-106 lb in).

  4. Install the oil level gage guide tube and bolts (1).

    5. Tighten
    Tighten the oil level gage guide tube bolt to 9-12 N·m (80-106 lb in).

  5. Install the timing belt front upper cover bolts (3).

    6. Tighten
    Tighten the timing belt front upper cover bolts to 9-12 N·m (80-106 lb in).

    Important: When installing the bolt, use the screwdriver as shown in the picture (1).

  6. Install the crankshaft pulley and bolt.

    7. Tighten
    Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to 65-75 N·m (48-55 lb ft).

  7. Install the right wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .

  8. Install the timing belt front upper cover and bolts.
  9. If equipped, install the generator driver belt, A/C compressor driver belt and power steering driver belt.
  10. Install the right headlamp. Refer to Headlamp Replacement .
  11. Connect the negative battery cable .
