Disassembly Procedure
- Remove the caliper assembly. Refer to
Brake Caliper Replacement
.
- Remove the guide pin bolts (1).
- Separate the caliper housing from the carrier (2).
Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.
- Remove the front brake pad set (1). Refer to
Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement
.
- Remove the pad springs (2).
- Remove the guide pins and boots (3).
Important: Do not face in the direction of the removal.
- Remove the piston boot (1).
- Insert a cloth or a piece of hardwood into the caliper housing.
Caution: Wear safety glasses when using compressed air in order to prevent eye
injury.
Caution: Do not place fingers in front of the caliper piston(s) in an attempt
to catch or protect it when applying compressed air. The piston(s) can fly
out with force and could result in serious bodily injury.
Notice: Use just enough air pressure to ease the piston out of
the bore. You can damage a blown-out piston even with the padding.
- Apply compressed air to the caliper brake hose connector hole in order to remove the piston from the caliper.
- Remove the inner seal (1).
- Remove the bleeder valve (1).
- Remove the bleeder valve cap (2).
Inspection Procedure
- Clean all of the parts in denatured alcohol.
- Dry the parts with unlubricated compressed air and blow out all of the passages in the housing and the bleeder valve.
Important: Do not remove material from the piston or the caliper bore.
- Inspect the piston and the caliper for scoring, nicks, and corrosion. Replace the components if necessary.
- Inspect the bleeder valve. Replace the bleeder valve if necessary.
Assembly Procedure
- Lubricate a new piston inner seal with brake fluid.
- Install the piston inner seal into the caliper housing groove. Ensure the seal is not twisted.
- Lubricate the piston with brake fluid.
- Push the piston inward until the piston is properly seated.
- Install the piston boot.
- Coat the pins (3) with Silicone Brake Lubricant, GM P/N 89021536, ACDelco P/N 89021537 (Canadian P/N 89021538), or equivalent, and install the boots.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the bleeder valve (1) and the bleeder valve cap.
Tighten
Tighten the bleeder valve to 6 N·m (53 lb in).
- Install the pads and the pad springs. Refer to
Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement
.
- Install the guide pin bolts (1), connecting the caliper housing and carrier.
Tighten
Tighten the pin bolts to 26 N·m (19 lb ft).
- Install the caliper assembly. Refer to
Brake Caliper Replacement
.
